About this deal

Gascoigne was naturally literate and intellectual, as he showed in his other major TV work – the historical documentary series The Christians (1977), Victorian Values (1987) and The Great Moghuls (1990). His genuine erudition drove a business sideline in high-end publishing and bookselling. This allowed him to choose TV work carefully but also led to a second quiz show, in which, improbably as it might seem in a contemporary medium cautious about high culture, he went somewhat upmarket from University Challenge, fronting Connoisseur (BBC Two, 1988-89), a panel game in which the subject matter was exclusively the fine arts. Magnusson lived with his family in John Street, Portobello, an eastern suburb of Edinburgh. He was educated at the Edinburgh Academy, where he was in the school's marching brass band, and at Jesus College, Oxford. [2] Career [ edit ] Journalism and television [ edit ] Patience is a virtue Mike Hooper 5 acquired years ago, which has stood him in good stead since his arrival at Anfield. You see, the person with the Procedures preference sees chains of events, steps in a process or sequences of activity. They like to know where they are in the process and where it will end.

‘His learning was worn lightly and smilingly’: Mark Lawson

The Great North Run is a half-marathon taking place annually between Newcastle upon Tyne and South Shields. Gascoigne was also intensely telegenic, if in a slightly eccentric way. His repertoire of encouraging or consolatory smiles or grimaces, nods and head anglings were relished by Griff Rhys Jones – who played ‘Bambi’ Gascoigne in a 1984 episode of The Young Ones – and Mark Gatiss, whose portrayal in the 2006 college comedy movie Starter For Ten introduced Bamber to generations for whom the surname was most associated with the footballer, Paul. The presenter’s unassuming charisma was a good fit for a quiz show that was visual in multiple ways, with its trompe-l’œil (a word which was more than once a starter round answer) effect of the teams sitting on top of each other (in reality, they were side by side on the studio floor). The appearances of the competitors allowed younger viewers (at least white and middle-class ones) to see people on TV who unusually looked like them – while parents and grandparents could jeer about the need to visit a barber or clothes shop. When he is reporting from Bangladesh on the Rohingya people fleeing Myanmar, or from a Covid ward at the Royal London hospital, you don’t – and shouldn’t – get much of a chance to see who Myrie is (apart from a seriously good journalist). Same when he reads the news. There are little hints. I noticed him saying, on the BBC News channel, that he thought Jodie Whittaker had been brilliant as the Doctor. And there was a simple: “Nice one; now the weather,” at the end of a piece about Charlotte Worthington’s BMX Olympic gold. Bowcott, Owen (8 October 2007). "Mastermind seeks more women". The Guardian. Magnus Magnusson, KBE (born Magnús Sigursteinsson; 12 October 1929 – 7 January 2007) was an Icelandic-born British-based journalist, translator, writer and television presenter. Born in Reykjavík, he lived in Scotland for almost all his life, although he never took British citizenship. He came to prominence as a BBC television journalist and was the presenter of the BBC television quiz programme Mastermind for 25 years. [1] His catchphrase "I've started, so I'll finish" was said whenever the time for questioning a contestant ran out while he was reading a question on the show. Cup Final Mastermind was an annual playoff between experts and supporters from the FA Cup Finalist teams they are supporting. It ran from 1978 and 1980. I always suggest to people who have booked for Module One of NLP Practitioner training that they pencil in the dates for the rest of the programme, ‘to keep their options open’. Why? Because I’ve had a few people in the past who booked for Module One, loved it and wanted to carry on through the programme but already had a lot of the dates booked for other things and so weren’t able to join us. By trying to keep their options open they actually removed the option to complete the course. The person in Options mode, on the other hand, finds it harder to say ‘yes’. The next step could be a month or two away and they don’t know whether there might be some other opportunity coming their way. They want to keep their options open. Maybe they book for Module One and decide to wait and see about the rest of the programme. This is, of course, exactly why we offer the opportunity to come to Module One with no obligation to go any further. I believe that once you have experienced the magic of NLP, you’ll want to do the whole course but I understand it’s a big commitment of time and money and you want to be certain that it’s for you. Modest Gary said: "It’s quite funny in a way. I did look at what some of the people had posted and was tempted to reply but didn’t want to embarrass them. My female friends would tell you how boring I am. All I’ve done for the last four years is take part in quizzes."Gascoigne’s accent – and the Oxbridge colleges who dominated University Challenge’s early decades – gave the show a very English feel, despite its American roots in a show called College Bowl, which the Bernstein family, who ran Granada TV, wanted to emulate for UK television. The subject matter – and title – might have been thought potentially intimidating to audiences, but the Bernsteins specifically intended Granada to be a BBC within the ITV commercial structure, and there was no panic over hard questions on the kind of tough subjects that Gascoigne knew so well.
