About this deal

It's available as tablets, capsules, granules and as a liquid that you swallow. It also comes as a gel, mousse and spray that you rub into your skin. Whilst no teratogenic effects have been demonstrated in animal experiments, the use of ibuprofen during the first and second trimesters should, if possible, be avoided. NSAIDs have been associated with spontaneous abortions and congenital abnormalities. During the 3rd trimester, Ibuprofen is contraindicated as there is a risk of premature closure of foetal ductus arteriosus with possible persistent pulmonary hypertension. The onset of labour may be delayed and the duration increased with an increased bleeding tendency in both mother and child. There is limited evidence that drugs which inhibit cyclooxygenase / prostaglandin synthesis may cause impairment of female fertility by an effect on ovulation. This is reversible on withdrawal of treatment. The use of systemic ibuprofen is therefore not recommended in women attempting to conceive (Schaefer, 2007).

Oral NSAIDs, including ibuprofen, can sometimes be associated with renal impairment, aggravation of active peptic ulcers, and can induce allergic bronchial reactions in susceptible asthmatic patients. Although the systemic absorption of topically applied ibuprofen is less than for oral dosage forms, these complications can occur in rare cases. For these reasons, patients with an active peptic ulcer, a history of kidney problems or asthma should seek medical advice before using Ibuprofen gel as should patients already taking other painkillers. But if you're already taking ibuprofen by mouth regularly, you will not get any extra benefit from also using the gel, mousse or spray. These tend to be best for when you have a pain under the skin and in a very small area of your body. Adults, the elderly and children over 12 years: Squeeze 2 to 5 cm (i.e. 0.8 to 2 inches) of gel from the tube and rub into the affected area until absorbed - then wash your hands straight away. The amount of gel squeezed would be equivalent to 50 to 125 mg of ibuprofen. If ibuprofen makes you feel dizzy, stop what you're doing and sit or lie down until you feel better. Avoid coffee, cigarettes and alcohol. If the dizziness does not get better within a couple of days, speak to your pharmacist or doctor. Do not drive or ride a bike while you're feeling dizzy. Ibuprofen is contraindicated during the 3rd trimester of pregnancy and should be used with caution in the first 2 trimesters. If you need to take ibuprofen tablets, capsules, granules or liquid for a long time and you're at risk of getting a stomach ulcer, your doctor may prescribe a medicine to help protect your stomach. The recommended dose of ibuprofen is 50 mg to 125 mg three to four times a day. The amount of gel to be applied varies with the brand used, consult specific product literature. This is a medicine; Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have an underlying medical condition, are taking any other medication or complementary therapy, or if symptoms persist. Do not use if you are allergic to Ibuprofen or any of the ingredients, aspirin, or any other painkillers.

Do not use if you are allergic to any of the ingredients or have experienced problems with aspirin, ibuprofen or related painkillers (including when taken by mouth). Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may interact with blood pressure lowering drugs, and may possibly enhance the effects of anticoagulants, although the chance of either of these occurring with a topically administered preparation is extremely remote. Do not worry if you occasionally forget to use ibuprofen gel, mousse or spray, just carry on using it when you remember. If you put on too much ibuprofen gel, mousse or spray Patients with asthma, an active peptic ulcer or history of kidney problems should consult their doctor before use, as should patients already taking aspirin or other painkillers. Make sure you rest and drink plenty of fluids. Try not to drink too much alcohol. It's important not to take any other medicines for pain to help with headaches. Talk to your doctor if the headaches last longer than a week or are severe.

These can be signs of a serious allergic reaction and may need immediate treatment in hospital. Long term side effects
