Cinebench is often a good predictor of our Handbrake video-editing trial, another tough, threaded workout that's highly CPU-dependent and scales well with cores and threads. In it, we put a stopwatch on test systems as they transcode a standard 12-minute clip of 4K video (the open-source Blender demo movie Tears of Steel ) to a 1080p MP4 file. It's a timed test, and lower results are better. This means that the measured response time is better than the average of all tested devices (21.8 ms). What really stood out to me was the peak brightness, being so close to 500 nits. This made a big difference when using the laptop next to a bright window. I still don’t think it’s enough to battle glare from direct sunlight, but I don’t use my laptop outside much anyway. After taking a look at the inside, I noticed a very familiar sight. The cooling system is exactly the same as what I saw on both the 15” Legion 5 and Legion 5 Pro. The only difference is the heat pipes were stretched out a little further to span the chassis. Frankly, I expected more. The screen refresh rate is 165Hz, which to me is more than enough speed for productivity and most gaming needs. Especially paired with a 3070, I think this is a good balance of refresh rate. You can also switch it to 60Hz if you wanted to save on some battery life a little. Quiet mode isn’t too shabby either, which is a good reason to opt for the 3070, if keeping noise levels low is your style. Still, it would have been nice if Lenovo included a QHD screen as an option. I think it would have paired better with the RTX 3070 for sure.Below the keyboard is a large touchpad. It's centered below the keyboard, making it look offset to the left when you consider the number pad. I found its positioning felt natural, and its matte finish allowed for smooth gliding and accurate recording of gestures. Battery life (and recharge times) will vary based on many factors, including system settings and usage. There are already Legion 5 15.6" and 17.3" with RTX 3070 listed in stores, at least in the Nordics. Quiet mode is noticeably better on the fan noise, however your TDP gets limited to a mere 10-12W. Your TGP stays at 115W though, so if you’re playing a game that doesn’t require much CPU usage, you might get good results with lass fan noise. In this mode, the fans peaked at 42dB. Quieter but not exactly “quiet”. If you’re wondering if this is the right laptop for you, I think the main thing you need to ask is if it’s the right size and weight. If your sights are on a 16″ gaming laptop solution, your options are probably narrowed down to this, the HP Omen 16 and even the Asus Zephyrus M16. But considering those three, this is both the larger and heavier of the bunch.

If I were to use this regularly, I would probably choose a TDP of 25C. This seemed to have minimal impact of most games, and yet limited the fan noise closer to 50dB, while in Performance mode. It also allowed the TGP to hover close to 140W for longer periods of time, offering better GPU performance. I didn’t spend a lot of time using this tool, but it’s nice to know it works. It is a fast screen though, and paired with a 3070, it makes most games run over 100fps even at max settings. The 80 Wh battery can manage decent battery runtimes, but it depends on the GPU. When the Nvidia GPU is running and the hybrid mode is deactivated, we record up to 5 hours in our Wi-Fi test and 1:45 hours under maximum load. Competitors with working graphics switching obviously have an advantage in this respect. And again, if you want a little boost to these stats, I highly recommend swapping out the RAM. As you can see, I got better results across the board with my old RAM. If this is something you plan on doing, do some research on what RAM modules will perform better. There’s quite a community out there noticing this and it’s growing. For now, here’s a specs sheet of the Legion 5 Pro and Legion 5 models, based on the little we know so far, and we’ll update as we dig out more details. Note that while the standard Legion 5 models are available in either 15 or 17-inch FHD 16:9 versions, the 5 Pro is only available with the newer 16-inch QHD 16:10 display. It's too bad the screen response time is 9ms and there's no overdrive mode. Needs to be 7ms for a 144hz panel. If esports and motion blur matter for you this might not be the laptop. Otherwise great deal”When you get right down to it, the Legion 5 Pro is an excellent laptop in so many ways. Of course the main draw is the 16″ 16:10 screen, which is both bright and beautiful, but also unique to just a select few laptops at the time of this review. I wish it was the high gamut panel like on the Asus Zephyrus M16, but it’s still better than almost everything else out there.
