About this deal

Wonderful and harrowing, horror legend Mike Flanagan’s seven-part series is deeply human – and unforgettable Fear, David (October 5, 2021). "The Most Terrifying Show on TV Right Now? It's 'Midnight Mass' ". Rolling Stone . Retrieved October 6, 2021. The vampires are taking over the world. It’s apocalyptic. A few individuals make some cool wins against the vampires. I liked the intelligence and thoughtfulness. Davis, Clayton (February 22, 2022). "Critics Choice Super Awards: 'Spider-Man,' 'Justice League' Among Film Nominees; 'Evil,' 'Midnight Mass' Lead TV". Variety . Retrieved March 18, 2022. So they sang, rejoicing, before the sunlight burned them all away, removing their blighted existences from the world. Sheriff Hassan and Ali Hassan

"From 'Doctor Sleep' to 'Midnight Mass': Mike Flanagan and the Newton Brothers Discuss Collaborative Magic". Rolling Stone . Retrieved October 6, 2021. So who does Wilson set against this growing empire of evil? Sadly the 'good guys' read like the start of a joke and they end up being cliché heavy. The 'good guys' are: a b Petski, Denise (August 9, 2021). " 'Midnight Mass': Mike Flanagan's Netflix Horror Series Unveils First Trailer, Premiere Date". Deadline . Retrieved August 9, 2021. Being that Carla Gugino and Kate Siegel are staples to his work, their individual storylines in his movies and television shows could allude to further connections and plotlines in Midnight Mass. Considering that the Lady of the Lake (Siegel) in The Haunting Of Bly Manor killed a vicar, there's an immediate connection between the actor and the religious aspects of the upcoming series. It may foreshadow Siegel's role in the series, as much is still relatively unknown. While Gugino hasn't been listed as a cast member, the fact that she was so isolated in Gerald's Game may contribute to another character's experience with isolation in Midnight Mass. The series' story won't likely make mention of either movie, as it solely exists as a book in their respective cinematic universes. However, it is entirely plausible that similar instances could be described as a form of fear mongering to keep people isolated on the island.Erin herself, however, died. We assume, because of her tainted blood and death via Angel that she burned up in the sunlight off-screen. During her remaining time though, with her body's cells dying but the neurons in her brain firing, she remembered her cosmic beginnings and realized that "we are the cosmos dreaming of itself." I know it sounds like a very bad and probably socially unacceptable joke, but this was my first thought when I started reading this book by F. Paul Wilson. But it actually does this very dark and serious vampire apocalypse fiction a disservice. Horror is the genre that many look to when they want to see society stripped of its false narratives. The myth that technology is only benevolent. The myth that civilization can protect us. The myth that any long-term earthly consequences for humanity’s short-term greed don’t matter because God has a mysterious plan and will reward us in the afterlife. Tallerico, Brian (September 24, 2021). "Midnight Mass". RogerEbert.com . Retrieved October 4, 2021. The penultimate chapter, "Book VI: Act of The Apostles," capped things off with a harrowing Easter service bloodbath, as Monsignor Pruitt (Hamish Linklater) introduced the "Angel" to his congregation, encouraging everyone to take poison so that they may be resurrected in eternal life - aka as vampires (though vampirism is never said outright).

Flanagan told the New York Times that Midnight Mass is his most personal story yet, based on his own years of religious exploration and “a healthy Catholic upbringing” that was challenged by his personal study of the darker aspects of the Bible, until he ultimately found more affinity with atheism and science. Despite these self-professed doubts, however, there’s very little doubt in Midnight Mass. The show’s overtures toward critiquing America’s Christian majority fall by the wayside. Instead, Flanagan and his Midnight Mass co-writer, his sibling Jamie Flanagan, wrap a tale of religious zeal around a barely veiled allegory for the Covid-19 pandemic. Though Midnight Mass was conceived before the pandemic, it was produced during the pandemic, and inevitably reads as a pandemic-era cautionary tale — one that’s bolstered by an emphasis on individualized faith. There’s so much effusive Christianity here, so many rapt displays of faith, sermons, monologuing through Bible verses, and preaching to the lost, that the horror elements almost feel like window-dressing. There is a requirement for deep listening, and attention,” Annabeth Gish said of the series. “I think there’s a real availability for understanding about what’s happening in our world right now. It’s very timely. So, I hope that people receive that. I think there’s something very special about this project.” Bev’s complete readiness to usher in the book of Revelations might sound over the top, but it really isn’t. As I watched Midnight Madness, I was frequently reminded of Mississippi governor Tate Reeves, who recently defended his leadership of the state with the worst pandemic death toll in the US by claiming that people who believe in the afterlife “don’t have to be so scared of things.” Even relatively mainstream Christian voices have questioned whether the pandemic is God’s judgment. Series creator Mike Flanagan described Midnight Mass as a passion project, one that was "deeply personal" and dealt intimately with Flanagan's upbringing in the Catholic Church, and his eventual sobriety and atheism. [9] He conceived the idea first as a novel, then as a film script, then as a television series that he unsuccessfully pitched to various production companies (including its eventual distributor Netflix) in 2014. Flanagan and Kate Siegel then adapted Midnight Mass as a story within a story in their 2016 film Hush (2016), in which Midnight Mass is presented as the most popular book by Siegel's character, Maddie Young, with Flanagan then planting the Hush prop book bearing the Midnight Mass title as an Easter egg in his 2017 film Gerald's Game, as a means of "keeping the idea alive over the years". [10] Prior to the series' production, Flanagan created the critically acclaimed horror series The Haunting of Hill House for Netflix, which released in 2018, as well as its 2020 follow-up The Haunting of Bly Manor.

Thrilling and horrific, with a dose humorous irony. Wilson's Midnight Mass is a return to the grisly, purely evil side of vampiric lore. And it's a welcome addition to a genre inundated with romanticized depictions.
