From the outside, the Ninja Speedi looks much like the company’s other air fryer/grill combination products, such as the Ninja AG651UK. In truth, the Speedi, despite the focus on its 15-minute meals, is a similar product in most regards. While this 5-in-1 multicooker and grill may not have quite as many functions as the Ninja 10-in-1 air fryer, it’s still a versatile machine. It offers multiple ways to cook including air frying, dehydrating, baking, roasting or grilling. The latest launch from the well-respected home appliances brand, this Ninja Speedi 10-in-1 Rapid Cooker and Air Fryer ON400UK is one of a wide range of air fryers the company sells. Using the Speedi is easy. With a mode set, it’s a matter of setting the target temperature and then the cook time. For any option involving steam, there’s a pre-heat phase before the main cooking time is started; regular modes just start the timer automatically. For the latter, I needed to add a few minutes to the cooking time, compared to an air fryer with a pre-heat function. This is a proper air fryer, too, although topping out at 210°C it can’t quite get the crispiest of results that air fryers with a higher temperature can reach. I do really like the steam air fry option: this creates perfect chips that are crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside.

Speedi Meals - The perfect programme for cooking one-pot meals. Build your own Speedi Meal by choosing a base grain and layering with vegetables, meat or fish, and other flavours - this dedicated pre-set programme does the rest. I also like the flexibility. One night, I used the bottom layer to cook rice. Towards the end of the cooking period, I added some pre-cooked onions, pepper and sliced steak, reheating them. Once finished, I removed half of the rice, and used that with a Thai green curry. Cooking for 20 minutes at 200ºC, with 125ml of water in the bowl, chips were evenly cooked and had a nice crispy texture to the outside, while the inside remained soft and moist. Quite possibly, this is the best that we’ve seen any air fryer perform. Frozen hash browns and grilling rump steak were also cooked to perfection. Pressure cooking works well, too, reducing the amount of time it takes to cook a lot of food. Not quite. While you’ll get similar results for most food, air fryers aren’t very good when it comes to wet batters, such as for fish and chips. Here, you’ll find that the batter drips off and you won’t get even results. The design is not too imposing and we love the way that the grill plate can be raised to make room for food underneath so that complete dishes can be prepared at the same time.

The exterior of the Ninja Speedi comes in a grey finish that looks good on the worktop. At 31cm (12in) high and just 6.5kg (1st) in weight, it’s not that hard to fit neatly on the countertop and store away afterwards if your cupboards are large enough. It's prettier than other multi-cookers at first glance - if it was a toss-up between the Ninja Foodi 9-in-1 and this smaller pastel cooker, I know which one I'd choose. There's also the introduction of the Speedi Meal Builder alongside the new cooker, an app that can generate a recipe for you based on the ingredients you have at home.An air fryer is a countertop kitchen appliance that makes it possible to achieve similar results to a pan or fryer without submerging food in oil. Instead, air fryers only require a small about of oil to circulate hot air around the drawer and crisp up food in a short amount of time. Can't picture how that might work? Imagine pasta in the bottom, tender vegetables being steamed alongside that, and protein on the top layer crisping up, just like it does in your air fryer.
