About this deal

NOTE: Although the 90 lb Pro EXP Stage 3 set would be my ideal first choice, I understand that budget is very important for most people, myself included…

One disadvantage of adjustable dumbbells is that the shape of the weight may force you to adjust how you train. The size of the weight or the way it's designed could force you to select another exercise or alter how you perform it. We also consulted with experts for safety cues and buying advice for adjustable dumbbells. The experts we spoke to included:Although these dumbbells don't ship assembled, it took us less than five minutes to fully assemble them, without needing any tools. Like the Bowflex weights, Core Home Fitness' Adjustable Dumbbells are simple to use. We were able to easily adjust the weights from exercise to exercise with a simple twist of the handles. However, we still think the Bowflex pair is superior for adjustability because it adjusts in 2.5-pound increments up to 25 pounds and offers 15 weights in one, while this pair adjusts in 5-pound increments and only offers users 10 weights in one. The Pro 175 Commercial Set (Note: you can convert the Pro 125 set into the Pro 175 set with the this 125-175 lb expansion kit.) The Bowflex SelectTech dumbbell could be better for beginners who want something simple to work with as well as lifters who really want to use the weights in all the ways you would a fixed dumbbell. The lifter who makes time a priority may also be pleased with the Bowflex adjustable dumbbell because turning the dials is faster than removing and adding a pin. Benefits of Adjustable Dumbbells Hi Yuri, the U90 Stage 1 set (50 lbs) is a great choice if you’re able to find one used. Although the U90 sets are discontinued, you can still buy new U90 expansion kits in case you want to expand your 50 lb set to 70 lbs or 90 lbs in the future. ( UPDATE: Pro EXP expansion kits also are compatible on the U90.)

The Elite dumbbells have a “Closed Handle” design. This refers to the padded wrist support bars at the top of the handle. These supports let you prop your lower forearm against the pad to keep your wrist neutral with little effort. It can also provide leverage on curls so that you focus more on your biceps. Some people love this. Others with very large hands and wrists find it to be restrictive to their wrist/forearm movement. I’ve also heard that the urethane used on the Pro EXP’s may be better than what was used on the U90s (e.g. it might be overall more durable and/or be better able to withstand hot/cold temps) — But don’t quote me on that, as I haven’t confirmed it. Unfortunately, the Pro expansion kits do not work with the U90 dumbbells. You’ll have to find them second hand or from a 3rd party retailer that may still happen to carry the U90 kits. During testing, we appreciated how grippy the dumbbells felt in our dry hands. But after the sweat test, we did notice some slipping and sliding, which made for an insecure grip during many overhead exercises. Overall, this durable pair is great for intermediate users looking for a space-saving set of high-quality adjustable dumbbells. As far as why the HOME USE models no longer expand beyond 90 lbs, I do believe I asked them about this a while ago — If I remember correctly, it’s because most customers didn’t get the super heavy models (you have to remember that a lot of their customer base includes casual fitness enthusiasts, or personal trainers who use the dummbbells to train beginners — not serious powerlifters/bodybuilding types).
