About this deal

Slinky Malinki can steal anything - from a clothes peg, to a slipper, to a string of sausages!! But, will Slinky realise that crime doesn't pay? Told in wonderful rhyme and through pictures full of life and movement, Slinky Malinki is the very first adventure of the rapscallion cat in Lynley Dodd's famous Hairy Maclary and Friends series. In Slinky Malinki we also have the trope of the Werebeast, which is associated with a number of subtropes. Slinky’s night-time personality shift comes with nightfall and is psychological rather than outwardly manifested. Kinks and Curlicues I must say that i love rhyming books! not only do they amuse children but more laughter is created when a verse ends with a rhyming word they weren't expecting to hear. The rhymes flow in a vividly manner bringing the story to life. The art does a very good job of showing what the characters and settings look like and offer a satisfying ending for the mischievous and thiefing cat.

Has Hairy ever caused such mayhem? Thank goodness for Miss Plum, who once again steps in to save the day! Sometimes a story is not actually magical, but something is infused with a supposed supernatural set of forces. This was a fun read. Slinky Malinki is an adorable cat. by day is is fun and playful and at night his naughty, mischievous side appears and boy does this cause trouble! Slinky Malinky just comes to life in this story. Lynley Dodd shows how cheeky this cat is, which shines through in the lyrical way she tells the story.

No door, wall, fence or basket can contain these cheeky and adventure-seeking youngsters from Parkinson Place. The quartet of escape artists roams the neighbourhood at all hours. Easily keeping up with the most energetic adult cats, they incite each other to greater and greater feats of daring. While each kitten looks very different to his or her siblings, the four are always together in a set, playing and tumbling and scuffling in a blur

Meet Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Donaldson's Dairy, always ready for mischief. In this fabulous set of audio rhyming tales, Hairy Maclary and his friends just want to have fun, but trouble is never far away! The moon plays a prominent role of course. First, the illustrator needs a light source, but more importantly, according to folklore (and modern hospital workers), strange things happen when there’s a full moon. In one image we even see Slinky carrying a perfectly round balloon (as well as a slipper and a sausage link), and the blood-red balloon partially obscures the moon. This makes Slinky seem as if he is at one with the moon, and like he might be carrying a moon replica in his very own mouth. The moon, we gather from this picture, is the reason for his personality transformation.

Slinky Malinki becomes a thief by night. He steals anything and everything he can get his paws on, from slippers to sausages. Eventually Slinky’s greed takes over which leads to his criminal downfall. Slinky Malinki is a very naughty cat, in fact he portrays just how much cats are a law to themselves, and extra special A**eholes 😂

I borrowed this book from the library when my little boy was a toddler, not realising it would become one of my most treasured memories of a book. I adore this poem, and the artwork is perfect. It isn't an easy book to get hold of (at the time of writing) although we do own another in the Slinki Malinki series.

I know this book off by heart. The words are a joy to read out loud and it should not be experienced any other way. It is a rare classic and although... Lynley Dodd: A Retrospective 26 January - 24 March 2013". waikatomuseum.co.nz. Waikato Museum . Retrieved 12 September 2019.

Told through playful rhyme and colourful illustrations, Slinky Malinki has delighted generations of children with his laugh-out-loud adventures. Tonkinese cats can be ‘quite obsessive’ too, and here’s one who has a penchant for male underwear.(Tonkinese are a Siamese-Burmese cross.) There must be quite a history of cats thieving, or at least lurking about looking like they’re thieving: consider the English word ‘cat-burglar’. More picture books than you might think start with the horror genre and modify the symbolism and tropes for little kids. Stories which manage to achieve this are surprisingly popular. Kids love happenings that take place at night — this is an opportunity for the carnivalesque. The horror genre is really great for making use of symbol, because it is one of the most highly symbolic genres (along with Westerns and sci-fi, which are less common in picture books.) Hairy Maclary is off for a walk, and he's joined by furry friends of all shapes and sizes, from Bottomley Potts (covered in spots) to Schnitzel von Krumm (with a very low tum). Malinki is based on Dodd's cat, Wooskit, who was with her for 13 years. Slinky Malinki is very silly. [4] The Guardian lists Malinki amongst the top ten cats in children's fiction. [5] Original artwork of him has been part of a travelling exhibition over a number of years, [6] [7] [8] and he is part of a sculpture of some of Dodd's characters at Tauranga. [9] Reception [ edit ]Children will love looking at the detailed illustrations of each dog, and it's a great conversation starter around different words to describe how each dog looks and might feel" - The Evening Standard After the 2000 US presidential election had been described as a 'schmozzle', Dodd's use of the word 'shemozzle' in this book was discussed in US media, [16] with the following verse quoted: Told through playful rhyme and vibrant watercolour illustration, this hilarious classic story has delighted children for generations. This elegant cream-coloured Siamese wears a collar which impeccably matches her bright blue eyes and is adorned with a delicate tinkling bell. Along with Pimpernel’s elevated breeding, being the Minister’s cat gives her a certain status. She is well aware of the impression she makes – she has even won a ribbon at the local cat show for the ‘Snootiest Cat’. But her dignity melts away in the presence of a ball of wool (or a ball of any kind) and in the next moment she’s pouncing and scrabbling about like a kitten. With her sharp intelligence and alert senses she’s always an asset on the cats’ night-time outings, where she’s the first to spot and spit at an imposter. a b Moesch, Christine A. (August 1991).
