The film cuts to Arthur, now crowned King, sitting in the throne room with Archimedes, feeling completely unprepared to take the responsibility of royalty. Overwhelmed by the cheering crowd outside, Arthur calls out to Merlin for help, who arrives (in 20th-century attire) and is delighted to find that Arthur is the King that he had seen in the future. Merlin tells the boy that he will rise and lead the Knights of the Round Table, accomplishing many amazing feats and becoming one of the most famous figures in literature and even in motion pictures (such as this film). White sometime during my MA, and I'm not sure exactly why: rereading The Sword in the Stone, I still rather loved it, with its gentle humour and the character of the narratorial voice and its understanding of each character. I note that in my first review I noticed the way it treats Kay, which is a good sign for this dissertation...

This story is trying to tell us that even though we are not strong or big, our heart and mind should be strong and big. Disney fans know how Wart became Arthur, and that Merlin wears a robe of stars, and all that other Sword in the Stone stuff, and may think it all child's play, but this is not a dumbed down book. Seriously. It's well-written and delightful, an overlooked classic that ought to be discovered by the many fans of Harry P.

Kay expresses jealousy of Wart and his magical adventures. Merlyn tells them the story of a rabbi who walks with the prophet Elijah and is given a lavish welcome in a poor man's home and a stingy one in a rich merchant's home. Elijah causes the poor man's cow to fall ill and dies, while the merchant's wall is repaired by a mason. When asked why he did this by the rabbi, Elijah says he spared the poor man the loss of his wife while the repairs to the wall actually hid treasure from the rich man. Merlyn instructs Wart to take Kay on an adventure of their own. Said the Duchess, “Good idea, my dear. All we need is one knight who is so strong he can pull that sword from the stone. Then we will have a king again, at last!” The people danced and cheered. At last there was something to feel happy about! News of the tournament traveled fast. From castle to village, to every far corner of the land. At last, word got to the far-away home of Sir Ector. Sir Kay heard the news when he was polishing his helmet.

Kay prepares for his impending knighthood while the Wart continues his education. (The Wart will become Kay's squire after he is knighted.) King Pellinore informs Sir Ector, Sir Grummore, and Kay that Uther Pendragon has died without an heir, and to remedy this politically chaotic situation, a sword has appeared outside a church in London, running through an anvil and into a stone. The inscription on the sword's pommel reads, "Whoso Pulleth Out This Sword of the Stone and Anvil, is Rightwise King Born of All England." A tournament is announced on New Year's Day to give all able men in England a chance to remove the sword. Kay convinces his father that they should attend, and he agrees. The Wart then enters, upset at Merlyn's announcement that he will no longer be tutoring him. Merlyn does assure the boy, however, that they will meet again. All five books are available in the Plus catalogue till the 27th, and I hurried to start them so I'd have enough time, but with this narrator I don't think it'll be a problem. I zoomed though the first book faster than I anticipated and I think the rest are a bit shorter so they should go even faster. There are parts of it that are beautiful, parts that are so wonderfully well described, like Wart's time with the geese, or when he's turned into a fish, and the narrative voice is so wonderfully understanding of what goes on inside people's minds. I like the way it treats Kay -- like he's good at heart, but he messes things up by trying too hard to be what he's not, the pride in him. And one of my favourite moments is when Ector says to him that he will always be proud of him, and Kay then decides to tell the truth...

Wart and Merlyn return to Ector's castle, and the wizard becomes the boys' tutor. He pays special attention to Wart. Merlyn turns him into a fish, and together they explore the castle's moat. In one of their excursions, the boys and Merlyn encounter Little John, who leads them to Robin Hood (referred to as Robin Wood) and Marian. Their extended stay with Robin culminates in an encounter with a griffin. Kay manages to slay the beast, taking its head as a trophy. During the fray, the griffin breaks the Wart's collar bone. His voice is so comforting, and he gives every character a unique voice so you don't mix them up. And his delivery of funny lines is excellent, I spent so many parts smiling and laughing. Wart is the main character of the story and eventually becomes King Arthur. The foster son of a wealthy lord, he feels frustrated that he will never be a knight like his companion Kay. Under Merlyn's tutelage he learns valuable lessons that make him a suitable future monarch. He is depicted as having altruistic motives, while sometimes being naive about the selfishness of the people around him. Merlyn After he is crowned King, The Wart is given gifts from all over the world and from his friends—both animal and human. Sir Ector sends him a dunce’s cap, which magically transforms into Merlyn. Merlyn then explains what he has known all along: that The Wart is Uther’s son, and that his real name is Arthur.
