About this deal

I got more caught up in this story than I had expected, and my hands were shaking slightly as I got to the end of the book, to finally confirm the truth I had suspected. This was the first book by Kate Morton that I have read, and I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for more of her work. In 2010, Morton's third novel, The Distant Hours, was released, followed by her fourth, The Secret Keeper, in 2012. He rmost recent novel, Lake House, came out in 2015. ( Adapted from Wikipedia. Retrieved 9/23/2015.)

Whooshing like a wind through a tunnel, an angry wind that drags behind it a summer storm, rushing towards me, faster and faster. It is my past, and it is coming for me. It is everywhere; in my ears, behind my eyes, pushing my ribs…" I have surprised myself. While moths have torn holes in my recent memories, I find the distant past is sharp and clear. They come often lately, those ghosts from the past, and I am surprised to find I don’t much mind them. Not nearly so much as I had supposed I would. Indeed, the specters I have spent my life escaping have become almost a comfort, something I welcome, anticipate, like one of those serials Sylvia is always talking about, hurrying her rounds so that she can watch them down at the main hall. I had forgotten, I suppose, that there were bright memories in amongst the dark. An extraordinary debut . . . written with a lovely turn of phrase. [Morton] knows how to eke out tantalizing secrets and drama.’— Sunday Telegraph (UK) Grace has resisted ever telling anyone about the events at Riverton. Why? What makes her change her mind? Is Grace a reliable narrator? Given her motive for recording her memories, can we trust her? Then there are those where you see them coming from the beginning (a good example for this is another book I read from this author, The Forgotten Garden) and dislike them at once.

Starred Review. Morton triumphs with a riveting plot, a touching but tense love story and a haunting ending. Not only did this instantly endear Grace to me, it was also a reminder of one of the many ways used to keep people in their place - something that never fails to make me bristle with anger. As the book progresses, I was rather delighted that perhaps one of the few brighter aspects of a war-shattered country was many people questioning this world view.

Unless otherwise stated, this discussion guide is reprinted with the permission of Washington Square Press. This is My guilty pleasure and my go to novel when I am in need of a little tender reading care. Something historical, set in a rambling period property on a country Estate, preferably in the middle of the English countryside, throw in a little mystery and intrigue and a few family hidden secrets and I am putty in the authors hands Despite their differences, how might Grace and Hannah be seen as "doubles"? How does Grace's relationship with Alfred mirror Hannah's relationship with Robbie?
