When it comes to double-dips, I typically skip reviewing the movie portion to save time, but considering the fact that our first 'Top Gun' review was for 2 Stars, and the second was for 3 Stars, I thought it would be funny if the third one was for 4 Stars (FWIW, it's my honest opinion). Who knows, maybe when Paramount releases the 4K Blu-ray 30th Anniversary Edition in 2016, that reviewer will adorn it with a full 5 Stars? Paramount has released Tony Scott's seminal 1986 picture 'Top Gun' to Blu-ray, newly remastered in 4K. The disc also includes a Dolby Atmos Cleared for Take Off (HD, 9 min) looks at the rigorous training of the cast & crew in the effort of accomplishing some of the astonishing action sequences with the fighter jets.

Finally, there are more than a few moments where planes or people, who appear deeper, connect with the frame's edge and spoil the illusion, but there are only a couple outwardly BAD shots (for my eyes). These both included mirror reflections, and the added depth of the distance behind the mirror feels wonky. Ghosting, for those with prone displays, is minor (on some titles and some of the smaller jet shot). As you can probably see, 'Top Gun 3D' is definitely a mixed bag. From my point of view, there were more impressive moments than failures, but as an overall experience, the 3D doesn't enhance the action. It's cool. It looks good. It makes for some gorgeous, some less so, high definition. But serve story or improve the film, it does not. Detail is excellent, revelling in the nuances of the faces of the frequently sweaty core cast, with a loving layer of texture to it leaving you with no concerns whatsoever that the underlying detail may have been scrubbed away - sure, this is a clean print, but it's got no signs of excessive DNR implementation, merely affording the image a gorgeous clean-but-textured look.

Feel free to argue whether or not he deserves this title, or the relatively quality of his various pictures over the decades, but his film and television business is a billion dollar enterprise.
