About this deal

We Wanted this to Be a Fast-Paced, Funny Adventure”– Rob Williams and Pye Parr on ‘Petrol Head’, Their “Fast & the Robo-Furious” Sci-Fi Series from Image Comics September 22, 2023 The Family Education Trust, a think-tank, has complained to the Reading Agency and the Arts Council England, alleging the books have “massive safeguarding red flags” by grouping 13 year olds with those above the age of consent. This is a sweet, straightforward YA graphic memoir about the author's experiences growing up and coming out as trans in the early / mid 2000s. The UK perspective was new for me and I imagine this book will be very important for young trans people there! This told the story of what life was like for Lewis (a trans guy) as he navigated his teenage years and his identity. A unique coloring book with stunning artwork from the bestselling Heartstopper series. Soon to be streaming on Netflix!

This book is easy to read even though it's about the author's conflicted childhood. He had a supportive, if not perfect, family, and at least two very close female friends. But his life, especially the teen years, were full of inner discomfort about his gender. He tried to be a tomboy sometimes and to be just a girl other times. Neither of those worked, as he is a guy. Absolutely delightful. Sweet, romantic, kind. Beautifully paced. I loved this book." -- Rainbow Rowell, author of Carry OnNot all trans or LGBTQIA+ kids have support from their biological family, but families come in all shapes and sizes, whether biological or chosen.

The third volume in the poignant and sweet Heartstopper series, featuring beautiful two-color artwork!Whisper Me a Love Song Vol. 1-4 – Eku Takeshima’s Realistically Paced Queer Love Story is a Heartwarming Tale Lewis grew up in small town named St. Helens in England (TIL there's a place called that there - there's both a town and a mountain with that name near me in the PNW, so had some momentary confusion).

A ground-breaking memoir about being a trans teen. Lewis has a few things to say to his younger teen self. He knows she hates her body. I really enjoyed taking a trip down memory lane with Lewis; revisiting MySpace, MSN, CD Walkmans, quadvods and Tammy Girl (I used to love that shop!). But Hancox's graphic novel is not just about his own story of growing up and becoming who he was always meant to be, it's also a lifeline for younger readers who may feel confused about their own identities, or who are sure of their identities but feel unsure of where to get support. I thought I wouldn't like the format of his current self narrating scenes from his earlier life. But it worked well, and helped in getting to know him. Some of the scenes (and his later observations about them) are hilarious, but it's always obvious that the conflict was emotionally debilitating.

If you're doing the challenge and haven't yet read this book, it's a great choice. It's an autobiographical graphic novel about a young transgender person's journey from childhood through his teen and young adult years and transition.

Note: this could also be number 8 in Book Riot's challenge, "Read a graphic novel/comic/manga if you haven’t before; or read one that is a different genre than you normally read.". Recently shortlisted for the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize for 2023 Welcome to St. Hell is another important account of the lived experiences of trans people. Raw, witty and occasionally very tender, this is a graphic memoir that deserves all the positive recognition it has received. The shortlists consist of 18 books across three categories. Six books will compete within each category to be crowned Category Winner, with the three category winners then vying for the overall title of Waterstones Children’s Book Prize Winner 2023. Welcome to St. Hell: My Trans Teen Misadventure – Lewis Hancox’s Graphic Memoir is a Raw, Witty and Tender Tale Fully Deserving of Its Critical Acclaim Kirja avaa hyvin Lewisin pohdintoja ja hämmennystä, mutta toisaalta antaa äänen myös hänen ympärillään olleille läheisille. Tämä on hyvä huomio, sillä muutos ja etsikkoaika ei koskenut vain Lewisia vaan myös ihmisiä hänen elämässään.

My Book Notes

It Was Wonderful to Connect with Others Who Are in My Place”– Rachael Smith Talks New Motherhood and ‘Nap Comix’ October 30, 2023 I follow Lewis on social media and was so excited that he was going to be sharing his story in the form of a graphic novel. Read the voices in my head exactly as they are in his skits haha. This memoir set in a small British town is narrated by the author in comic book format as they relate what it was like to be white closeted trans man in the early 2000's. He knows she's confused about who to snog. He knows she's really a he and will ultimately realize this... But she's going to go through a whole lot of mess (some of it funny, some of it not funny at all) to get to that point.
