From bright sunlight to night-time, the Akaso gives good footage that’ll hold up fine in most YouTube videos. Featuring 4K60p video, the Brave 8 can capture ultra-smooth moments in stunning detail. Meanwhile, the 8K time lapse feature gives users the ability to capture an epic hike or incredible bike ride in all of their entirety. When GoPro first launched there was plenty of speculation over whether this unknown brand would be able to cut it in a world of big names like Canon and Nikon, yet now it’s the benchmark for action cameras. Purists will be disappointed to find no 24fps option for a filmic style, but I do miss 25fps, which is what I edit all my footage in. The supplied remote control is charged via a micro-USB port, which is a shame but not a problem assuming you have a cable at home, as one isn’t supplied.The Action 4 also benefits from DJI’s D-Log profile with 10-bit color. Based on our review, this dramatically enhances color depth and dynamic range, capturing detailed highlights and cleaner shadows. The downside of the larger sensor and wide 155-degree lens is an increased minimum focus distance, making it harder to shoot up close. Outright performance is also throttled slightly by the microSD memory. You need a big screen: The 1.3-inch display on the One R 1-inch edition is too small and square for easy composition. Filming at 1080P, 30fps the Brave 7’s 1,350mAh battery lasted 1hr 41mins. The 1,220mAh cell in my GoPro Hero 7 managed 2hr 4mins (and that’s after a couple of years of use). You want the best image quality: A small sensor limits quality, with overexposure and telephoto softness issues too. The Akaso Brave 8 is definitely not the smallest or lightest action camera I have tried. Its a very acceptable size but isn’t as impressively slender as pettire as the OCLU Action Camera. The remote (annoyingly) takes an older microUSB cable, while the camera and battery charger take the current USB-C, a hint that the remote is something of a hangover from an older model. The mounts are very similar to GoPro items, although the system isn’t quite as robust, allowing the camera to be twisted out with relatively little force, and a good fit needs two small sets of lugs to engage – something that could be easily overlooked in more extreme use.

You record close-ups: A 0.4m minimum focus distance means objects close to the lens won't be sharp. You probably know this already but it’s not a camera for photographers. Whilst the Akaso Brave 8 can take still pictures, this aint its best use. You can take equal quality snaps with modern smartphones and if you need pro-stills then go grab a great DSLR camera. If you are skint, then don’t buy this camera. Whilst it’s cheaper than a GoPro and is fairly priced for its spec, it is just not a bargain-budget option. The Akaso Brave 7 LE offers an incredible range of features for its price. If a front-facing screen and weather-sealing are more important to you than outright video quality, then it should certainly be high on your shortlist. In our tests, this model's audio quality was better than any other non-GoPro we've reviewed (in quieter environments, anyway) and it has a fantastically intuitive touchscreen interface.The Akaso has a claimed maximum field of view of 170°, which sounds good but in practice it’s tighter than the GoPro’s. In fact, I’m not sure how it’s measured, but the 170° field of view is slightly tighter than the GoPro’s 133.6° 16:9 wide setting, let alone its ‘Super View’ setting. Having a spare battery is also really useful, especially for those long days in the mountains or on the trails when you want to capture a lot of footage. While the right action camera for you will depend on what and how you like to shoot, there are some key skills every good action cam should have. It should be rugged enough to endure some rough and tumble, plus waterproof down to at least a few meters. It should also be straightforward to use and operate, even in extreme conditions. Touchscreens can make an action cam easier to control, but if you plan to shoot while wearing gloves, it might make more sense to select a model with physical buttons.
