However, bearing those points in mind, this book is a fascinating read. It is fascinating as social history- not only in terms of crime and punishment but also in the morals and perceptions of the past - Pierrepoint is very squeamish about discussing the details of his role in front of women for example. In 1901, Henry's wish was granted and he was made the assistant of James and William Billington. He continued to work with the brothers before becoming the principal executioner of the UK in 1905. In July 1940 Pierrepoint was the assistant at the execution of Udham Singh, an Indian revolutionary who had been convicted of shooting the colonial administrator Sir Michael O'Dwyer. [b] The day before the execution, Stanley Cross, the newly promoted lead executioner, became confused with his calculations of the drop length, and Pierrepoint stepped in to advise on the correct measurements; Pierrepoint was added to the list of head executioners soon after. [28] [29] As lead executioner, 1940–1956 [ edit ]On July 13, 1955, Pierrepoint executed another high-profile murderer, Ruth Ellis (above), a model and nightclub hostess who’d shot her abusive boyfriend to death. Because she was a woman who’d killed an abusive boyfriend while clearly in a state of extreme stress, Ellis’ death sentence was extremely controversial among the British public to the point that the government’s views on capital punishment began to change.

There have been murders since the beginning of time, and we shall go on looking for deterrents until the end of time. If death were a deterrent, I might be expected to know. It is I who have faced them last, young lads and girls, working men, grandmothers. I have been amazed to see the courage with which they take that walk into the unknown. It did not deter them then, and it had not deterred them when they committed what they were convicted for. All the men and women whom I have faced at that final moment convince me that in what I have done I have not prevented a single murder. [78] Hodgkinson, Peter; Rutherford, Andrew (1996). This, coupled with the English Law principle of 'joint enterprise' was enough for him to face the death penalty. Only people over the age of 18 could be put to death and so, despite never wielding a weapon, Bentley at 19, was hung in 1953 with protesters gathered outside the prison. Henry Pierrepoint was the first of his family to become a hangman. He wrote to the Home Office repeatedly to offer his services whilst he was working as a Butcher in Manchester.
