A fresh piercing is susceptible to infection, some may even be rejected by the body, which means aftercare of a new piercing is extremely important. On the day of your appointment, your piercer will offer you saline solution and an aftercare leaflet to help you take care of your piercing once you leave the clinic, but here are some other things you can do (as well as what to look out for) to ensure a safe and healthy healing period.

Pain, redness and swelling are not a normal result of ear piercing and can lead to infection. Should pain, redness or swelling appear any time more than 24 hours after the piercing, see your doctor immediately. Minor pain/redness may occur immediately – this is normal but will settle within 48 hours provided proper aftercare is carried out. If excessive pain/swelling/redness occurs, seek medical advice before removing the ear-piercing stud. The piercing area should be cleansed with aftercare solution, then kept dry, especially after bathing, swimming or exercise. We will ask you about your ear-piercing expectations and let you choose a pair of stud earrings from our Caflon range Push the butterfly towards the earlobe – the butterfly must always be at the end of the post. Feel the position each time you clean the ear – it must feel smooth. This ensures that the earring remains loose during the healing period. An earring that is too tight may lead to inflammation.
