On our weekly Tuesday Tips live show, I recently talked through my thoughts on the Prime GO, so if you want to see me discussing what’s in this video with our audience, here it is: Outside of a single AUX input, there are no connections for external devices. This is meant to be an “in the box” device, so you won’t find RCA ports for turntables or CDJs. You can use it with your laptop as a controller, but only with Rekordbox in performance mode… there’s no Serato this time. I have DJed with a laptop for years, but especially when playing outdoors and when livestreaming, it is so much simpler to DJ with a portable, standalone item like this.You don’t have to worry about system requirements, latency, or whether you have the right number of USB ports… just get right to the DJing.

Here’s the thing. Small versions of “serious” gear often feel at best like also-rans, at worse, like cheap consumer versions of that bigger gear. Not here. While this isn’t, of course, particularly cheap, it is built just as well as the more expensive Denon DJ Prime gear. It is a dream to DJ on, albeit a bit fiddly (although the small jogs don’t bother me at all). In all ways, it feels like “pro” gear to DJ on – just shrunk. Strangely maybe, the small jogwheels didn’t worry me at all – and I thought they might. If you don’t have a preference, you can base your decision entirely on which hardware you like the best.There are lots of viewpoints and opinions expressed on the show from our DJ community too, so it is well worth a watch if you’re considering buying one of these, or just curious. Also the unit wasn't turning on after I turned it off , after 1 h I repress the button and it turned on battery at 70 % , a friend was guessing it was empty Full 4-Channel Standalone – Unlike previous Pioneer offerings the OPUS-QUAD offers full 4-channel standalone capability. An excellent option for Pioneer fans that want access to all 4 channels without the need for a laptop. The PRIME 2 also doesn’t have external inputs for turntables or CDJs, and it is missing the four Sweep FX (the knob controls a filter only). And while it does support Virtual DJ, Serato is out. The Prime GO has a built in rechargeable battery which can run for approximately 4 hrs on a single charge, allowing you to party in places you wouldn’t normally have access to power. Take it on a long journey to practice, a party in a park with a battery powered speaker or even on a mountain top! Pair it with some battery powered PA speakers and hotspot to a phone you can play from millions of songs to anyone, anywhere.

Impressive FX –The XDJ RX3 offers a staggering amount of FX options. 6 sound color FX along with 14 Beat FX give you plenty of flexibility. Plus this selection of FX is the same that you’ll find on club gear.Standalone systems are also much more similar to what one will encounter out in the wild, when playing on flagship DJ players like the CDJ-3000. You (or your friends) need only to plug in a Rekordbox or Engine-prepped library on a USB drive, and you’re off to the races. I’m not sure what “looks fine” means. A usual IMD test through an analog piece of gear is going to send the raw test signal to the gear and then analyze the output from said gear in comparison. Pioneer CDJs from the mk3-on seem to produce the exact same amount of IMD present in the original test signal at zero pitch when using the SPDIF. The Prime standalone players’ digital audio processing adds 100X the intermodulation distortion of the original signal in RMAA. The comparison to the original signal measurement is what matters: how much more IMD is there compared to original. Well, to be fair, all these systems have screens that can just as easily be stared-at as a laptop. But, at least they are at the center of where you’re working, instead of way off to the side somewhere. PRIME GO has Denon DJ’s ENGINE OS under the hood to take care of lightning fast operations during your DJ performance. With continuous firmware upgrades keeping you empowered with the newest, forward-thinking features, ENGINE OS will keep your music flowing expressively. ENGINE PRIME librarian software (Mac/PC) is your music library and set preparation tool which syncs your other music collections, including iTunes, Serato DJ, Traktor and Rekordbox™. Using just PRIME GO (yes, you got it, no computer needed), you can also import a full Rekordbox™ collection direct from a media source, internally analysed (including playlists, hot cues and loops) within the unit itself.Another option is to go standalone, but not all-in-one. For example, a set of XDJ-1000s (which are like baby CDJs) and a mixer accomplishes a similar task, just in separate pieces. In fact, I use this setup here in the studio all the time… original 1000s and a DJM-850. The output from the Go (master RCA and XLR out) were measured with a PicoScope 5000-series digital oscilloscope set to 16-bit resolution. Although this is hardly a high-performance audio analyzer it is more than adequate for this job. As a first DJ setup, it’s certainly easy-to-use and well-made, although the price probably puts it beyond entry-level and, unless you’re dead set on entering the Prime sphere or really want the wireless power, there are better value options out there. If you require the extra two channels, external inputs, or access to streaming services… choose the PRIME 4. Otherwise, it’s mostly a matter of taste.
