About this deal

A Laxton apple, from the early 20th century. Cox crossed with Wealthy, small apples and prone to scab, but good flavour. Sport of Alkamene; a modern variety bred in Germany. Compact habit, healthy tree with medium vigour. Retains some of the Cox flavour (Cox is a distant parent). Fruit is pleasant and uniform, but we have had lots of canker and scab problems. Well-known commercial apple, bred in Australia. Surprisingly perhaps, we have found it crops satisfactorily in our difficult climate. Flavour of northern-grown apples is quite acidic, but refreshing! Skin is blushed red over the familiar green. Tree is not vigorous, and quite compact. October to January.Medium to small apple, crimson flushed over green base.Flesh is white, juicy and refreshing. Healthy and reliable, and agood keeper, in our experience. Small fruit. Recommended. Birds can be a problem so hang up old CDs and build elaborate scarecrows with battery timers and big hats. Net the bushes if desperate.

The main disadvantage of these plants is that they are very thorny, similar in shape and pointedness to the native matagouri or ‘wild Irishman’ scrub so you will get many a punctured finger trimming twigs and opening up the bushes with secateurs. This kind of pruning is a good idea though for helping the fruit to bask in those valuable sugar-yielding solar rays. We were all extremely upset and disapointed and it ruined our day. We had gone there to relax and it was the most stressful day we had ever had.Now since Christmas day i believe business hasnt been good and now they are closing down! Others walked out on the day aswell. Shouting and swearing was heard coming from the kitchen and the waiting on staff were left in tears. No wonder. If they ever read this i hope they feel bad for spoiling our day and will admit to themselves that they let us all down that day. The picture above shows my ever-vigilant organic friends’ collection in full fruit over summer. Their bushes are above waist height, planted into the ground, and mulched with sphagnum moss for weed suppression and moisture retention. October to December. Probably of Victorian descent, large, irregular apples with mild sweet flavour. Very reliable, and usually heavy crops. Late September to January. Oblong-conical fruitwith predominant ribbing. Flushed red over green base.Quite rich, cream flesh. Mid-late September. Dark, crimson apple with distinctive ribbed shape. Can suffer from superficial scab damage to skin.

Modern apple, bred for disease resistance in organic systems. Flavour is sweet and quite conventional. We have not found it to be as disease resistant as we hoped - scab and canker mainly. Along with other thorny things like totara and gorse, cattle will avoid them unless fed hard, but horses or goats will not blink at the odd spine, so you do need to protect them. About Wadworth: Wadworth is an independent family brewer and regional pub operator, very proud of its West Country roots. Founded by Henry A Wadworth, the business passed to his founding partner John Smith Bartholomew and is now in the fourth-generation of ownership by the Bartholomew family. Wadworth has created original beers at its brewery in Devizes, Wiltshire since 1875 and is one of the few remaining family brewers to deliver to the local area using shire horses. It also has a 200-strong pub estate and works hard with its business partners and managers to ensure that the pubs offer a warm and welcoming atmosphere, quality food and drink and excellent accommodation to make their customers’ days. Flesh is white, crisp, juicy.Flesh can be tinted pink when fully ripe (like the others on this list, it will ripen in the fruit bowl).October to December. Mediumapple, red flush and faint red stripes over gold. Firm fleshed with sweet- sharp, pear-drop quality, almost spicy. In some seasons benefits from thinning. Blossom is most attractive. There were some good points - the food was beautifully presented, my salmon was in a delicious sauce, (would have liked more of this sauce) and the waiter there when we needed him but not over attentive My wife had Cumberland sausage and mash with deep red brown rich onion gravy. I sampled that too, it was equally nice. For dessert we had toffee apple brioche, a kind of apple based bread and butter pudding with cream this was exceptionally good, all rounded off with fresh coffee. Modern variety bred specifically for organic systems in the Czech Republic. Similar to Cevaal, a nice eating apple but with disease and cropping issues, for us at least.

Course director Simon Thelwell said: “The transition to more sustainable food production is a significant change for many farmers, so understanding these issues, identifying the opportunities they present and being prepared to make changes is the key focus of the course and we’re delighted to welcome our learners from across the industry and across the UK. Pax: dark red when fully ripe, large and sweet berries but requires pruning to thin out and shape its vigorous, spreading nature, virtually spineless at maturity.By this time we had had enough. We had been there far too long and there was still 3 more courses to arrive. We asked for the bill. Full price it said! So we queried this with the owner Terri and the head chef who i presume is her partner. They were raging that we had the cheek to complain about there establishment. No apology just disgust that we hadnt enjoyed there efforts. After telling us to just get in our cars and leave and swearing at us at the bar we walked out halfway through our Christmas meal. Mid September to late October. Golden, conical apple with firm, cream coloured flesh. Local to Lancashire and Westmorland. The old people always seem to grow top prize-winning gooseberries. My 84-year-old neighbour Kate used to entreat me to see her hydrangeas, large seedling avocado trees, and finally her prize gooseberries. They were small bushes, carefully tended, horribly thorny, but covered in glowing red fruit the size of plums, nothing like the old, tiny, green, hard sour lumps of my childhood memories. Anotherproduct of Marcus Tydeman's nursery - Worcester bred with McIntosh. We have had slightly irregular crops, but good quality and Deliciousfruit. We have been voted ‘Traveller’s Choice 2023 and in the top 10% in the UK’ on Trip advisor, and we are rated ‘Excellent’. Dine with confidence! our restaurant has consistently been awarded a ‘5 Star Hygiene’ Rating year after year. We always use only the finest ingredients and where possible always source locally.
