About this deal

While classically inspired, Fujifilm’s XT series arguably has more in common with other modern mirrorless bodies. The viewfinder and flipping LCD screen, not to mention the menu navigation buttons, are all similar to the likes of Sony, Nikon, and Canon. But, the Fujifilm XT5 sits halfway between the modern and the classic with the labeled top dials for shutter speed and ISO, not to mention the silver color option. I switched from a DSLR to the XT4 more than a year ago. While initially hesitant about the transition, I now can’t imagine a life without those top dials and an aperture ring around a metal lens. Fujifilm isn’t really known as a brand for fast action — and if there’s one thing I think Fujifilm needs to focus on for future generations, it’s the continuous autofocus. Both the X Pro 3 and XT4 have similar specs for autofocus and consistently missed a handful of action shots. The XT5 feels a little behind, trying to keep up with that more pixel-dense sensor.

Fujifilm has often led the way when it comes to crop sensor cameras and the X-T5 has pushed this envelope even further with the brand serving up the highest resolution APS-C sensor on the market. It's actually almost as small and portable as the original X-T1, just measuring 16mm deeper because of the IBIS unit and larger capacity battery. The new X-T5 has a slightly lower base sensitivity of ISO 125, which can be expanded down to ISO 64 and up to ISO 51,200. Video The resolution of the screen has also been increased slightly from 1.62M-dots to 1.84M-dots, making it the highest-res screen of any current Fujifilm APS-C camera. Memory CardsThe X-T4 does support a vertical battery grip, which as well as making handling easier in portrait mode, greatly increases the available battery life. Price Fujifilm offers a wide range of lenses as part of its X system, a benefit of its decade-plus time in the market. It's one area where the X-T5 bests the Canon EOS R7; while Canon has been making SLR lenses forever, its mirrorless system is relatively young, and there are fewer to choose from in Canon RF mount, especially if you're talking about bright, lightweight primes. There are more differences when comparing the X Pro 3 to the XT5, with nearly four years between the two bodies. The XT5 houses a 40.2-megapixel sensor which means more detailed photographs, though the difference may be less noticeable with older lenses that aren’t designed for a high-resolution sensor. The XT5 wins right up until passing ISO 6400, where the X Pro 3 and the XT4 produce noticeably less grain than the higher resolution sensor. The newer camera offers a highest quality rate of 6.2K/30p with a modest 1.23x crop recorded in 4:2:2 10-bit internally.

If that’s not enough for you the XT5 also features Pixel Shift Multi-Shot, which uses the camera’s in-body image stabilization (IBIS) mechanism to shift the image sensor with precision, to shoot 20 images that can be combined to create a final 160mp image for the ultimate in image quality. In practice this feature is not always relevant to landscape photography where grass and foliage might be moving between frames resulting in a blurring in the image. However, for architecture this is a great feature. Memory Cards & Storage CF Express cards SD Cards Micro SD cards CFexpress cards Compact Flash and CFast cards Card Readers SSD and USB Drives Scanners Therefore it represents a big step forward in many ways for the XT-series, from the 40 megapixel resolution to unlimited 4K/60p recording with no crop, and from the faster, AI-driven AF system that can recognise a lot more subjects to the improved EVF and IBIS. Both cameras can also be powered and charged via a USB-C connection, which is useful if you're out and about and have a compatible power-bank to plug the camera into. Vertical Battery Grip The body features two SD Card slots which take the UHSII cards, the same as the XT4. Interestingly there is also a “No memory card warning“ in the camera – a new, but welcome, feature I’ve not seen before. The camera also features a 3D level rather than the simple horizontal level. Although video is not the priority for this camera you can now record 10-bit 4:2:2 video at 6.2K/30P.One thing that doesn’t change is Fujifilm’s excellent in-camera colour processing, with 19 Film Simulation modes onboard offering a wide range of attractive looks. Files can now be recorded in the 10-bit HEIF format, which in principle should offer better quality than conventional JPEGs. But as yet, this is somewhat negated by the fact that HEIF has rather limited software support. The 9H screen protectors can be a little difficult to get off. I usually use a hair dryer to apply light heat before trying to replace screen protectors. To be fair, most pixel shift modes face the same problems, so they remain best-suited to completely static compositions under controlled conditions, such as studio-based product or archive photography.

Fujifilm regarding the X-T5 could anger many A decision from Fujifilm regarding the X-T5 could anger many

Styled like a classic film camera, the X-T5 is aimed squarely at stills photographers. That said, unless you have them side by side you probably won’t notice in general use, and on the upside at least it’s not the 2.36 million dot EVF of the Canon R7.
