About this deal

Recommended by some is a diluted bleach solution to kill the algae living in the wood and to clean and brighten the teak. We diluted some household bleach and painted it on to damp wood, agitating it with a brush, leaving it for 15 minutes and then rinsing off. Things worth considering are that the existing colour of the furniture will influence the final colour of the stain. Water-based stains or paints cannot be used on furniture that has been oiled unless it has been thoroughly sanded or stripped. Always do a test area in an inconspicuous area such as the underside of the table or a chair to test any stain before starting any project. This largely depends on the type of stain used. Oiled furniture is by far the easiest to maintain. Once the finish starts to look worn, faded or like it’s losing its water repellent properties, all that is required is a thin application of oil-based garden furniture stain to restore the look of the furniture. This two-stage product, each stage bought separately, cleans and brightens the teak. The first is applied to wet teak with a sponge or brush – it’s quite thin – left for two minutes and then rinsed off. You paint a coat onto damp teak, wait until it’s nearly dry and paint on another coat. This is then left for some days, ideally with a little rain, whereupon the wood will turn a uniform silver-grey.

Garden furniture stains are used to restore the colour and protect softwood and hardwood garden furniture, that has turned grey or silver, as a result of water and UV exposure. Exposure to the elements strips and chemically alters the surface fibres, tannin and lignin in the wood that produce the woods natural colour. Some types of untreated wood can start to turn grey or silver in just a matter of months if left unprotected. Garden furniture stains and oils produce a translucent finish, usually in the colour of other wood species such as Mahogany, Oak, Teak, Cedar and Rosewood to name just a few. Garden furniture paints cover the wood with an opaque, weatherproof finish and are available in hundreds of colours from soft pastel shades to vibrant striking tones. Choose a sunny day, so they have a chance to dry out properly and won't develop mildew. If the fabric is just dusty or you’re short of time, use a vacuum to spruce it up in an instant. Better still if the covers are removable pop them on a gentle cycle every so often to keep them fresh. Now it’s time to protect your wood. This should be done every season. Teak oil will shield your hardwood furniture from the elements and keep it looking new. Using a rag, apply the oil, rubbing it in gently and following the grain. You can add more than one coat of oil, but make sure thefirst onedries completely before you apply the next. How to clean wrought-iron garden furnitureAnother two-stage product, the red cleaner is diluted at 5:1 for badly weathered teak and 10:1 for cleaner teak, and applied to wet wood with a sponge. It’s left for two minutes and then rinsed off before the second, green stage is applied.

These products are all (with the exception of Boracol) a first step in cleaning the teak – they will make it look better, but it will soon weather if not treated. This brightens the wood and is left until the desired colour is achieved. This cleaner and brightener left the best colour of all the cleaners tested, restoring the red-brown ‘just-sanded’ look better than any of the others. Hardwood garden furniture sets can be expensive, normally hundreds or even thousands of pounds. A cheaper alternative is to buy softwood garden furniture, tables, chairs or benches. Being softwood doesn’t mean that they are inferior and if well looked after, could last for decades. We applied it as directed and left it. After 10 days the wood had already started to look better, having lost the growth that had previously made it slippery and dirty. For opaque pastel shades and vibrant colours, we recommend using a dedicated garden paint. Garden paints are best suited to bare wood or wood that has been thoroughly stripped or sanded. They are not suitable for wood that has been waxed, oiled or treated with products such as wood preservatives that contain wax, oil or silicon. How to maintain a garden furniture stain
