About this deal

But was this affordable dash cam worthy of Best Buy status when we put it to the test, and is this actually a good deal? Keep scrolling to find out more. You can tinker a little with the auto-exposure settings, switch audio recording on or off and even input your licence plate number that is watermarked onto the camera’s footage. All of these are quite neat, if simplistic – far more than you might expect from a device of this price. Other features a) Before you start, you'll need to mount the SD or micro SD card on your Mac. If you have a Mac with an SD card slot, use that. If not, you’ll need an SD card adapter. A MicroSD card slot is used for recording, and no media is included. However, at the top quality setting a 16GB card should be enough for around 112 minutes of footage. Once the memory card is full, as with most dashcams the 112 will begin to loop recordings, deleting the oldest files and replacing them with the new ones as they are captured.

To see how the Nextbase 112 dash cam compares with other budget options, we tested the video quality in varying conditions. See our full Nextbase 112 review for the results. Please be aware that formatting the SD card will delete all the data on the card, so if you wish to keep any footage, please copy this across before you start the formatting process. 3. On an Apple Mac Computer Regarding the recording lengths, the camera will record continuously in small segments (1,2, or 3 minutes). It will record these segments consecutively until the SD card is full. Then the oldest piece of footage will be deleted and the newest will be saved in it's place. This will continue looping and is called Continuous Overwriting. The Dash Cam does this automatically to allow for more footage to be recorded and the old, unnecessary footage to be deleted without manual intervention. However Protected footage is not overwritten in the same way. These can fill the card and reduce the quantity of normal footage saved on your SD card. The device, rather unexpectedly, also comes with a parking mode. This uses the G-Sensor to detect an impact even when stationary, and switch on the device’s recording mode to (hopefully) catch a glimpse of whoever or whatever hit your vehicle. Unfortunately, the battery life of the 112 is only around 30 minutes, so it will struggle to stay alive long enough to make this mode really count. It is essential that you format your SD card every 2-3 weeks to delete the Protected filed and free up space on your memory card for new recordings.

For recording during the daytime, this Nextbase model is just about passable - you can make out number plates from five to 10 metres away. Things get a little ugly when the sun goes down, though, with the Nextbase 112 suffering from a drop in sharpness. Thanks to its lowly 720p video resolution, the 112 doesn’t deliver video quality at anything like the level of its 512GW sibling. Not surprisingly, the detail is very noticeably less, and although you can make out large text, you can’t read number plates unless viewed at close proximity and low speed. Overall, this is some of the weakest dashcam image quality we have seen. If you find you need to position the 112 pointing up from the mount at the bottom of your windscreen rather than hanging down from the top, it’s possible to rotate the display by 180 degrees. However, the buttons that were below the screen will now be on the top, which might be a little confusing.

Below are links to step by step instructions about how to update the firmware on your Nextbase Dash Cam. The Firmware Update Guides contain instructions for both Windows users as well as Mac users. Select the Dash Cam you have and wish to upgrade Its compact design makes this the perfect accessory for first time drivers, power goes directly into the mount, meaning that the dash Cam is free from wires and the camera will automatically turn on when you start your vehicle and off when you stop. Perfect to provide instant video evidence whilst on the roads. Honestly, it’s impressive how much the Nextbase 112 gets right for its incredibly low cost. Despite it’s understandably low image quality the user interface makes sense, the mount works well and the G-Sensor functions as intended. We don’t want to say you shouldn’t buy this device, but there is one caveat. Using Bluetooth 4.2 and Wi-Fi, your smartphone automatically connects to your Series 2 Nextbase Dash Cam.

smart home devices, get directions, find parking, and more— all while you keep your hands on the wheel and eyes on Overall, it’s very easy to set this device up, and the design is both functional and logical. [aawp fields=”B01N3SN68T” value=”button”] The G Sensor also has three sensitivity settings, as well as an off mode. This comes into play to detect sharp movements, which then triggers marking the current video recording as an incident. This means it won’t be overwritten during the looping process. One obvious indication that the 112 is a budget device is the video resolution it uses for recording. Where the 512GW boasts 1440p resolution, the 112 drops right down to 720p – 1280 x 720 pixels. This is basically a quarter as many pixels, so you won’t get anywhere near the detail, even under the best of conditions. The Nextbase 112 features a G-force sensor that's meant to save a video clip when the camera detects a crash. With inbuilt G-Sensors you can be sure that any impact recording will not be deleted and 120 degreewide angle lens it really is your own independent witness in full 720p high definition. Editing – Crop and share your Nextbase Videos connect to friends/insurer using the free MyNextbase Cloud service. This is about the only optional safety feature provided by the 112. The other capability worth mentioning is Parking Mode, where the device will use its G Sensor to detect motion and trigger recording. However, the built-in battery is only rated for 30 minutes, and although the unit isn’t recording all the time, it won’t last a very long time in this mode. It certainly won’t protect your car whilst left in airport parking for a week. Nextbase 112 – Image quality

Low light performance isn’t particularly impressive either. Unless you are driving in very well-lit night conditions, you probably won’t be able to make out much detail. Again, there’s not a huge amount of noise or grain; the video is just very dark and you can’t see very much. b) Stop it recording by pressing the red circle in the bottom left hand corner of the dash cam's screen.

Surprisingly, considering the price of the 112, Nextbase has equipped it with a magnetic mounting system. This isn’t quite as seamless as the magnetic system we see on premium sat-navs such as the TomTom GO 520. But it still works quite well. The 112 slides into place and is held there by magnets. Starting this weekend, Lidl will be selling a budget-priced Nextbase dash cam as part of its Middle of Lidl sale. But when we tried it for ourselves, the dash cam we tested was a complete letdown, failing to recognise movement even at the highest sensitivity level. If you don't have your smartphone with you, still-photo support on the Nextbase 112 lets you snap a picture at the press of a button. So you’re looking to hop onto the dash cam wagon, but you’re short on cash. Very short. So short, in fact, that only the cheapest of the cheap will do. Where do you look? Whilst the answer to that question may have eluded you before now, we’re happy to inform you that you’re already in the right place.
