About this deal

On a more positive note, image stabilisation does a reasonable job of keeping most images blur free. We’d probably recommend steering clear of the digital zoom, but with 83x available, it’s debatable whether you really do need it in the first place.

Still, the P950 does what a lot of other cameras can't do. And if you're a fan of capturing wildlife, or just looking for a single-camera solution for a national park, the P950 is a very good option overall. It's still in a niche, but not quite as narrow of one as the Nikon P1000, an even larger, heavier superzoom with a 125x lens. At first glace you'd be forgiven for thinking the P950 was a DSLR camera, such is its bulk and exterior design. However, the camera and lens are a single fixed unit and cannot be separated. Though the P950 is slightly bigger than the P900 at 140.2 x 109.6 x 149.8mm, it's appreciably smaller the seriously hefty P1000, and also lighter at 1005g. But even this size and weight is still significantly more than a DSLR like Nikon's D5600 equipped with a 18-55mm kit lens. When the focus system hits, results look very good. When it misses, you're left with blur, or something that looks more like a watercolor than a photo (see above). The P1000 was announced more recently in July 2018 while the P900 was announced in March 2015. While both these cameras are very similar, there are a few key differences that will make you choose one over the other. Nikon Coolpix P950 Review | Photography Blog

Light seems bounce around inside the lens creating multiple hotspots and lowering contrast. On some occasions you can use it creatively, or reduce it by shading the lens with your hand, but at other times it ruins the image. The Nikon Coolpix P950 has 7 sensitivity settings ranging from ISO 100 to ISO 6400 at full resolution for both JPEG and Raw file formats. JPEG The viewfinder is one of a small number of improvements which have been made to the Nikon P950 compared with the P900. At 2359k-dots, it has more than twice the resolution of its 921k-dot predecessor. In use, it’s much more pleasant to use the newer viewfinder, giving you a bright and clear view of the scene. If you’re somebody that very often uses a viewfinder, and you’re struggling to decide between the P900 and the more expensive P950, this is something which may just sway you. Targeted at nature and wildlife photographers, the P950 is the ideal choice for those who like to photograph garden birds or local wildlife, but don’t want the expense and hassle of a multiple lens setup with a DSLR or mirrorless camera. Build quality If you shoot to protect the highlights you’ll find that you can recover a little detail from the shadows, particularly if you shoot raw files. Colour

The Nikon P950

In practical terms, you can shoot wide-angle views, similar to what the main lens on most smartphones captures, zoom in to bring distance subjects to view, or anywhere in between. There are some trade-offs made, with the sensor size being one, and the lens aperture another. It opens up to a very reasonable f/2.8, but it drops off as you zoom, eventually settling in at f/6.3.

These two images were taken moments apart, from the same position, at the extremes of the P950's zoom range. The house which is central at 2000mm is a mere spec at 24mm. This focal length puts it below the even longer Nikon P1000 camera, which offers 3000mm (equivalent), but still makes it one of the longest zoom lenses in the bridge camera market. The Nikon Coolpix P950 has a single SD UHS-I memory card slot. It would have been nice to perhaps see some UHS-II compatibility here to boost the frame rate beyond the 7fps offered. Let's be honest though: if you've read this far, it's because of that lens, right? In that case the matter is clear-cut. The simple fact is that pound for pound (and dollar for dollar), within the current crop of super-zoom cameras, the P950 represents the best value. What we like

With 5.5 stops of VR image stabilization, 166x Dynamic Fine Zoom, Target Finding AF capabilities and 7 fps continuous, the Nikon P950 enables stargazers and birdwatchers to capture high-quality photos or 4K UHD videos at extreme distances with ease. Get steady photos and video footage, even when shooting handheld at super-telephoto lengths, or in low light. Nikon’s Dual Detect Optical Vibration Reduction (VR) lets you shoot up to five shutter stops slower than otherwise possible. VR Active mode delivers a more stable viewfinder and monitor image, ideal when you’re on the move.

This makes the viewfinder much more pleasant to use, and will again be welcomed by enthusiasts. When you have a camera with a long zoom range the first thing everyone does is zoom to the furthest point of the lens. And it’s amazing how far you can zoom when the lens goes to 2000mm. The edges of this image (taken at 24mm equiv) are particularly soft, and definition is fairly low across the frame. Switching to Raw and spending some time in Photoshop will let you get the most out of the camera, but you're not going to get amazing edge-to-edge sharpness for landscapes. The P950 includes a vari-angle display screen and an eye-level EVF for image framing and review. The 3.2-inch screen feels a bit dated—its 921k-dot design isn't as pixel dense as you'll find on many new cameras, and there's no support for touch input. The P950's lens (like pretty much all lenses of this type) is best once you zoom in a little. This image was converted from Raw and I could probably have sharpened it a little more aggressively (and if I was intended to print it, I would) but cross-frame sharpness is nice and consistent. Shooting Raw has allowed me to get the white-balance exactly where I wanted it, reduce some minor blue fringing in the foliage against the bright sky, and recover a little detail from highlight and shadow areas.
