About this deal

Meanwhile, Skandar’s sister, Kenna, longs to join him – and Skandar is determined to help her, no matter what. As the storm gathers, can Skandar discover how to stop the Island tearing itself apart – before it’s too late for them all? A dazzling feat of imagination. I loved every breathless moment of it!’ – Cat Doyle, author of The Storm Keeper’s Island and co-author of Twin Crowns If you read the first book, Skandar and the Unicorn Thief, how do you feel this sequel compares to that? Had you predicted any of the events that happened to Skandar and his friends in this second book? Is there evidence in this book to suggest there might be a third Skandar novel coming? Support your theory and predict what might happen in the next installment. Flo’s mother, Sara, encourages the kids not to give into the bullies and says, “So the people with the power don’t like spirit wielders. What if they decide they don’t like healers next? Or saddlers? Or riders with flaming hair? Nothing gives the Silver Circle the right to abuse their power.” (p. 100) Write an opinion essay about why we should stand up to bullies who are trying to abuse their power. It can be political, about world or national affairs, or it can be personal, about people or kids in your own community. Steadman was educated at The King's School, Canterbury, attending on music and academic scholarships followed by languages and law at Selwyn College, Cambridge, and a master's degree in creative writing at Cambridge. Meanwhile, Skandar’s sister, Kenna, longs to join him – and Skandar is determined to help her, no matter what. As the storm gathers, can Skandar discover how to stop the Island tearing itself apart – before it’s too late for them all? Skandar and the Phantom Rider (Skandar, #2) by A.F. Steadman – eBook Details Ah well. Won’t be long, I expect.” Dad kissed her on the top of the head. “Night, sweetheart. See you in the morning.” Jamie sees that Skandar is extraordinary when he says, about the Island: “‘I’m talking about it being rotten at its core . . . stopping that—it’s on you, Skandar. I’m sorry, but it is.’” (p. 351) Bobby tells Skandar, “‘You always end up saving the day . . . because you actually give a damn about doing the right thing.’” (p. 298) What do you think are Skandar’s main motivations for wanting to do the right thing? In 2020, Steadman received a "seven-figure" three-book contract for a fantasy series about "bloodthirsty unicorns". [1] This is believed to be the largest ever advance deal for a debut children's writer. [1] In the same week film rights were acquired by Sony Pictures. [2] My book of the year. Not since Harry Potter have I felt this excited about a series. Readers are sure to be clamouring for the next book. You’ll never look at unicorns the same way again, nor will you want to!’ – Dominique Valente, author of the Starfell series

A magnificent book. I raced through it – at turns enthralled, delighted, amazed. It’s everything I could have wanted and more. No doubt this book is going to fly.’ – Hannah Gold, author of The Last Bear When a poison tide flowing across the ocean threatens their island, Roz works with the resident creatures to ensure that they will have clean water, but the destruction of vegetation and crowding of habitats jeopardize everyone’s survival. Brown’s tale of environmental depredation and turmoil is by turns poignant, graceful, endearing, and inspiring, with his (mostly) gentle robot protagonist at its heart. Though Roz is different from the creatures she lives with or encounters—including her son, Brightbill the goose, and his new mate, Glimmerwing—she makes connections through her versatile communication abilities and her desire to understand and help others. When Roz accidentally discovers that the replacement body given to her by Dr. Molovo is waterproof, she sets out to seek help and discovers the human-engineered source of the toxic tide. Brown’s rich descriptions of undersea landscapes, entertaining conversations between Roz and wild creatures, and concise yet powerful explanations of the effect of the poison tide on the ecology of the island are superb. Simple, spare illustrations offer just enough glimpses of Roz and her surroundings to spark the imagination. The climactic confrontation pits oceangoing mammals, seabirds, fish, and even zooplankton against hardware and technology in a nicely choreographed battle. But it is Roz’s heroism and peacemaking that save the day. Skandar was very slow to trust his Aunt Agatha Everhart as he initially knew little about her and then later found out she was the Executioner but he slowly got to trust her after she revealed much of her shared past with her sister Erika and how it is similar to his own with Kenna. This was complicated when Agatha was brought on to be Skandar’s Spirit instructor.

Spoiler Alert] At one point, Mitchell points out that “‘fathers can be complicated.’” (p. 315) Talk about some of the complicated relationships the unicorn riders have with their parents. How does Mitchell change his behavior to try to live up to his dad’s expectations? Why does Rex Manning try to stop his father from killing wild unicorns? Do you agree with Flo when she tells Mitchell his father “‘should love you as you are—not who he wants you to be’?” (p. 266) Skandar cares deeply for the rest of his Family, often worrying about his Father when he left for the Island and even more so when he left his sister Kenna. These worried frequently plagued him on the Island and he would often write letters. This would be made even worse after the Training Trial and into his second year when Skandar had lied about a lot that went onto the Island, though was somewhat remedied when Kenna herself was brought to the Island. Skandar and his sister, Kenna spent a lot of their early life helping their dad who was depressed over the death of his wife (which he didn't know was faked) and most nights Skandar didn't even have time to brush his teeth . He was brought up believing his mother was Rosemary Smith and she had died shortly after Skandar was born. Despite this, every year the family watched the Chaos Cup together and that seemed to be the only day his father was happy. Skandar and his sister grew up in Sunset Heights, Margate. Using textual evidence from the novel, describe why you think Skandar is or isn’t a trustworthy character. Who does Skandar trust?

Skandar Series by A.F. Steadman - Goodreads

Skandar loves the World of unicorns and was devastated on the day when he wasn’t allowed to take the hatchery test. He considers the Island his home and went further than almost anyone to protect it when the Island was imploding on itself due to the actions of Dorian Manning. He always liked discovering her things about the Island such as Four Point, or the Eyrie upon first entering. The next morning, whilst in the Earth training ground, Amber and the Threat Quartet rode up to the Quartet and Bobby noticed Amber's star mutation, saying, 'you've got something gross on your head'. Amber then makes fun of Skandar for wearing his mum's scarf and she boasts about how her father died 'heroically in a fight with about a hundred wild unicorns', she then calls him pathetic and rides away, followed by the rest of her Quartet. Instructor Webb announced that they would be learning about sand shields that would be useful in sky battles before showing them how to do it. Skandar tried to summon the Earth element but Scoundrel resisted and kept trying to summon Spirit, eventually Scoundrel went wild and threw Skandar off of him. Instructor Webb walked over and saw something on Skandar's arm, a spirit mutation, but he just thought it was a burn. Suddenly, Joby grabbed Skandar and told Instructor Webb that he must go to the Healer treehouses immediately. A.F. Steadman is an English author who grew up in Kent. She worked in law, like me, until she discovered the magic of writing. “Skandar and the Unicorn Thief” (the prequel to this book) is the breakthrough novel for A. F. Steadman.

Steadman has a vast imagination, her world-building is a joy, the battle scenes are thrilling and her characters charm.' – The Times Children's Book of the Week Epic, unforgettable and endlessly exciting, Steadman’s masterful sequel soars even higher than her debut.' Kenna’s desire for a unicorn of her own makes her envious of Skandar. Have you ever felt envious of a sibling or a friend? In addition to being envious, Kenna is angry at her brother and feels she can’t trust him. Why does she feel this way? What does Kenna and Skandar’s relationship have in common with that of siblings Agatha and Erika Everhart? Roberta is Skandar's best friend, teammate and possibly love interest. They first met at the Hatchery door.
