About this deal

Upgrading your old cabinets to soft close hinges is a relatively fast and affordable project. Especially c ompared to the cost of most kitchen renovations. This step is really a matter of preference, not compatibility. Both styles of hinges will work with your cabinets. Recovery time: the time that a cabinet door has to be open before the soft close mechanism is ready to function. If a hinge is closed before it is ‘recovered’, the soft close function will not work properly (or not work at all). If your old cabinets had hidden hinges (also called concealed hinges) then there should already be a 35mm hole for the new hinges. In high quality cabinetry, long arm hinges are typically used. Aside from being more expensive, the only downside of long arm hinges is that they are physically larger and take up slightly more room inside of cabinets. Unless cabinet space is extremely limited, this will not matter much.

Some projects are best left to the professionals, but this is the perfect kitchen upgrade for any DIYer with basic tools. How to Install Soft Close Blum Hinges: Step-by-Step Tutorial What can be done to stop doors banging loudly? How do they remain open, even when there is a draught? How can walls and furniture be protected from doors flying open, and fingers protected from doors banging shut? There are a few aids are available for these problems: these cover everything from wedges to floor mounted and wall mounted door stoppers. All of these usually do their job but are often ugly, annoying and impractical. I tested several long arm soft close hinges and found that some performed better than others. My biggest gripe with several of the hinges was the cabinets doors having noticeable resistance when opening.

Moving The Door Closer To The Cabinet

Next, I tested some of the more professional brands that are used in high quality cabinetry and… WOW! What a difference. All the Blum hinges excelled and seemed to work better than any other brands I tested . Particularly their BLUMOTION soft close hinges. What is BLUMOTION? In fact, the most difficult part of this project is choosing the correct soft close cabinet hinges to work with your style of cabinetry. Once you’ve got that figured out, installation is easy!

Now that you’ve determined whether you have face frame or frameless cabinets AND you’ve identified your cabinet door style, it’s time to select the specific soft close hinge style you want to use. Compact Hinges or Long Arm Hinges? Door dampers perform a better function. They are often integrated into door closers in swing doors, which always automatically close doors after they have been opened. However these are often very loud despite the damping. Note: These are the two most common hinge styles. Please follow the 3 steps under ‘Choose The Correct Hinge’ above to make sure you are getting the correct style of hinge to fit your cabinets.Note: If you have exposed hinges, which can be see when the cabinet doors are closed, it is possible to convert to hidden hinges if you prefer the hidden style. For those who value the visual connection that glass doors allow but have concerns about the frequent impact caused by their opening and closing, the KBS+ provides peace of mind through its secure breaking mechanism. Plus, it’s super-quiet, ensuring that movement in and out of the space is as unobtrusive as possible. The KLEIN Soft Closing System (KSC) Having a soft close sliding system is a lot quieter than a normal sliding system, as it stops the doors from slamming. This in turn can also help reduce the damage which can be caused when doors slam, increasing the longevity of your door furniture. Soft close systems are also good for households with small children, as they decrease the risk of children getting their fingers caught in sliding doors which move fast, as a soft close carriage slows down the closing speed, it gives children more time to move their fingers away, as well as the doors closing at a lower force. Related: How To Add Under Cabinet Lighting (in just 30 minutes!) Choose the Correct Soft Close Hinge in 3 Steps Doors run freely at between 25 and 60 degrees. When closing, the door is slowed down when it reaches around 25 degrees thanks to the active dampening. It then closes silently (soft close principle). GEZE ActiveStop therefore not only prevents the door from slamming loudly, but also prevents damage to the door and trapped fingers.

All the compact hinges we tested had relatively slow recovery times, but some were far worse than others. The times ranged from about 2 seconds to over 5 seconds! The Blum BLUMOTION compact hinge was the fastest recovering compact hinge.

The GEZE ActiveStop is also suitable for use in doctor's practices, hotel rooms or hospitals (but not for use with fire protection doors).

Compact hinges are small, simple, and affordable. They work well, but are not quite robust as premium long arm hinges. Depending on your budget for this project, compact hinges might be worth considering because they cost around half. Clipping the soft close hinges into the mounting plates should be easy as long as they are properly aligned. These cheap hinges were simply not the amazing upgrade I was hoping for, and honestly not worth my time. The third adjustment moves the door further to or away from the cabinet. You don’t normally need to adjust this; this is only done to allow an even gap down the edge of the door when you look at the door sideways on. Try not to have the door too tight or too close to the cabinet because when you open the door it will ‘bind’ against the cabinet and then you won’t be able to open or close the door very easily. You may find if your door won’t shut properly and it seems to be binding then this is the adjustment you need to make. Adjustments on soft close hinges
