About this deal

Her main characters grew up poor, and she deftly depicts how this shaped their future lives and the way they view people and situations around them. Like, maybe the real me would be waking up soon, and would walk to school, and have another normal day.

An audience outside of Japan probably doesn’t know Kawakami from her career as a pop singer, nor will they have experienced her writing as a blogger—this novel began as blog posts written more than a decade ago. Osaka is rife with drinking spots, but an address is enough to tell you what you should expect, in terms of clientele and atmosphere and hostesses. The layer of dust on top of the TV, the dirty dishes piled in the sink, the stickers all over the cupboard doors, the wood of the post where we had carved our heights. Breasts and Eggs ( Japanese: 乳と卵, Hepburn: Chichi to Ran) is a short novel by Mieko Kawakami, published by Bungeishunjū in February 2008. Section two is where the question is most pressing: this extended part of the novel flags because its questions about female freedom are reiterated – except by Yuriko – in fairly standard ways. But Mieko Kawakami has honed her technique in ways that distinguish her work from these other authors. As her characters stumble toward middle age, they wrestle with the ubiquitous question of reproduction. They’re taught to believe that their penises make them superior, and that women are just there for them to use as they see fit. There must be plenty of girls who haven’t had their period yet, but I feel like I’m the only one left.

Her daughter, Midoriko, has stopped speaking to her mother—she communicates by writing notes—but Midoriko’s journal entries reveal a girl who is afraid of becoming a woman. She went on to explain that an hour after the attack, a man in his mid-twenties turned himself in at the nearby police station and was being questioned. And from sundown to sun-up, on the third floor of a building throbbing with karaoke reverb, you’ll find the bar where Makiko works, five nights a week, from seven until around midnight. In a single paragraph, Natsu compares Makiko’s breasts to ‘Nessie’ and ‘mosquito bites’, her nipples to ‘two control knobs’ or ‘a pair of rubber tires on their sides’.To his credit, Haruki Murakami has been generously stumping for Kawakami in the literary scene, which is appropriate as her work complements his in important ways.
