CIGA Design could have just printed a map on the dial, but instead built something new: a watch with an uncommon silhouette and a brilliant dial that challenges its wearer and those who see it to not only tell time differently but to experience the world in a new way. The intricate dial details crisp oceans, sprawling mountains,and pristine land, acting as a constant reminder of what we all share and what we must preserve.

A tropic-style rubber strap, or maybe a black sailcloth strap with orange contrast stitching, to name a few. CIGA Design provided me the opportunity to review the Blue Planet during my time in the Big Apple, and for that, I’m grateful - Because I became a big fan.
It's a not so subtle yet never tacky statement piece that draws the eye and never fails to ellicit approving comments when folks ask to take a look. CIGA, which stands for Chinese International Great Art, has won several design awards in their relatively short career. While the minute hand of a watch rotates 360 degrees in one hour, the minute ring of Blue Planet needs to rotate 390 degrees in one hour. Those more eloquent than I have described the feeling as a sensation of simultaneous fragility and oneness. Some are skeletonized affairs that we’ve seen the likes of before (a little Richard Mille influence is there), but some are truly mind-blowingly original – especially The Rose, but also the Bauhaus-meets-Batman Series MY.

So, for instance, 12 o’ clock would have the Compass at the top of the dial and “00” right above it. The 15mm-thick profile is maintained by a perfectly curved domed sapphire crystal, which adds subtle reflection and protects the dial, just like the Earth’s atmosphere. Overall, the design is cool, but I find myself missing the sense of motion you get from a traditional three hander’s second sweep. At 46mm-wide, the lugless circular case of the CIGA Design Blue Planet – Gilding Version offers the same form and dimensions as its predecessor, but that’s where the similarities end. I just think there is something indefinable cool about the way it looks and it is one of those watches that will genuinely attract interest from strangers – if that’s your thing.
The idea of protecting the Earth, the only home we Earthlings all share, is vividly presented in the first few pages of the illustrations.

He has been ranked in the Top 10 Industrial Designers in China, after 20+ years working in architectural, subway, graphic and product designs. This watch, the CIGA Blue Planet, won the Challenge Watch Prize at the 2021 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG): the first Chinese brand to do so. Of course, it would go against the proud Chinese-made credentials of CIGA Design to use a foreign-made movement, so this choice makes sense. There have been several moments where I needed to check the time in a pinch; I took a look at my watch and ended up pulling out my phone instead. Overall, the Blue Planet by CIGA Design is one of the most fun watches I’ve had my hands on in a long time.I quite like this decentralized view of the planet, as the design may have come off as cheesy, were it a stereotypical framing of the Earth’s continents.

The quick-release fluorine rubber strap makes the case’s 46mmx46mm dimensions wear shockingly well, while the lugless design furthers the comfort by creating a much shorter effective lug-to-lug. L'intricato quadrante, realizzato con micro-incisioni e doratura multi-strato 24K, riproduce la Terra con un rapporto continente-oceano realistico. Although the case dimensions may seem bulky on paper, the lightweight ceramic material and fully lugless geometry work in tandem to deliver a surprisingly comfortable and compact wearing experience.
