About this deal

It delivers in the areas that you care about — there's 8GB of RAM, two eSATA ports, and four Gigabit Ethernet connectivity — and is the ideal upgrade if you're switching from an older NAS. However, the DS1517+ also has a PCIe slot, allowing it to accept a 10GbE LAN adapter increasing its network throughput by from 4Gbps to 14Gbps if all ports are utilised. and 5GbE connectivity via 3rd party adapters are possible (but I wouldn’t trust their long term stability really) and for many, this will be a deal-breaker between these systems in the same way the CPU differences between these two NAS’ does. The newer DS1522+ features a dual-core AMD Ryzen embedded R1600 that, although arriving with half the cores of the Celeron in the DS920+, has a higher CPU frequency and total achievable frequency in turbo/burst when needed. For me it doesn’t matter as much if the new apps arent quite as good as the old ones yet as long as they have been written on a newer platform that easier to add missing and new features later rather than an app that was based on ds 4.

The way that the cache is integrated into the Synology DSM makes the best use of it, but even with plenty of cache memory available it can’t address the thorny issue of LAN throughput. If you were already looking at Synology NAS systems that being heavy emphasis on scaling their architecture notably down the line in efforts to remain future proof, the DS1522+ is going to tick ALOT of boxes for you. Now, you are ready to move your precious data to the NAS, and later, depending on your needs, you can try out all the apps and services that DSM offers. The option of 10GbE later in the system’s lifespan, along with a huge 32GB of ECC memory on the DS1522+ I think narrowly put that NAS ahead, but it is by no means an unquestionable victory, as not only are those advantages of the DS1522+ more centred around additional purchases, but also the DS920+ features that quad-core graphics embedded CPU – which means that a number of common Synology NAS desktop uses for entertainment such as Plex Media Server and Video Station are going to run much more efficiently on the older system.

Of course, you will have to either require a managed network switch or have a system that can leverage the advantages of link aggregation/port trunking in the first place, but still, nevertheless, the DS1520+ provides you with a better overall available bandwidth early doors and even if all other elements of these devices were equal, you cannot beat more network interfaces on a NAS. As much as I am starting to appear like a broken record, it should come as no surprise that the Synology DS1520+ is the better storage choice compared with the DS920+ NAS. Because this design here has all the openings on the left and right and bottom where dust is sucked in, unlike the J.Synology Drive provides a built-in universal portal to access your data anytime and anywhere, and synchronize all your files across platforms, including Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS. Synology changed its position a bit on compatibility in a few of the 2022 series hardware releases (beginning with the RS3622xs+, DS3622xs+ and DS2422+ at the start of the year) with them stating that they fully support the use of their own HDDs and SSDs in these systems, but not in third party drives from the likes of WD and Seagate. You'll also find two eSATA ports, giving the NAS the ability to connect to two external drive bays and potentially adding up to 10 drive bays. The 4 and 5-Bay Diskstation releases from Synology have always been one of the most interesting tiers of the brand’s desktop solutions.

Here, I want to show you how to download and install it, and then how to use it from a Windows machine. It uses intuitive wizards to create basic tasks such as storage spaces, including storage pools, volumes, and shared folders. The drive bays can also be individually locked if you need to do so, and feature a tool-less installation — unless you want to slot 2. Now, this is not a connection that is available in the default DS1522+ and is an optional upgrade, but still it is good to know that the option of adding 1,000MB/s bandwidth is available down the road. The Synology HyperBackup goes in any direction using whatever cloud and whatever tools you are familiar with.Synology Surveillance Station – Safeguard your business, home, and other valuable assets with reliable video surveillance tools.

To partly balance what appears to be a retrograde step, two NVMe slots have been added to provide high speed caching of the drives. First, I will create one storage pool using Synology Hybrid Raid (SHR), then a volume, and finally, a shared folder. When you have the level of market dominance that Synology has in small business NAS, and you ignore how the market is moving, then trouble is undoubtedly on the horizon.A faster method, the one I will use for this guide, is to enter your NAS's name directly in the windows file explorer. Both systems can be initialized to operate with either a BTRFS or EXT4 file system, as well as supporting the wide range of services and features of the Synology Storage Manager. I'd really like to know what your iOS photo backup strategy is as well - since moving from Android that's been the hardest part to replicate for me. If you want some tips, guidance or help with everything from compatibility to suitability of a solution for you, why not drop me a message below and I will get back to you as soon as possible with what you should go for, its suitability and the best place to get it.
