The book captures the plight of the 19th Century poor, especially in depicting the long hours and unsafe conditions worked by children. Lord Fischel holds the poor in utter contempt, supporting the gloomy philosophy of the economist Thomas Malthus, namely that poverty and hard labour lead to early deaths of the workers and thus keep the population down.

Clive insists she moves into the house he has bought for her and says he will be back in a year to make a life with her and Richard. I don't want to give a spoiler review so I won't say WHAT that far fetched strangeness WAS; but suffice it to say this heroine had guts, determination and a whole lot of forgiveness in her heart.From the moment Bill Bailey arrived to take up residence at Fiona Nelson’s home in the Tyneside town of Fellburn, he made his presence felt in no uncertain terms.

Meanwhile, Matthew sneaks away from his fiancée to help Cissie build a big bay window in the cave so they don’t all turn into downtroddensickles in the winter. He went on to appear in a huge range of TV dramas, including the BAFTA-nominated Band of Gold and Peak Practice*. I kept seeing the movie in my mind as I read and I already knew to expect (or so I thought)and so I wasn't able to really get into the story.She tries to kill Cissie, but thankfully Clive is stalking nearby and SHOOTS HER IN THE HEAD before she can fire.

When fifteen-year-old Cissie Brodie loses her parents to cholera, she is forced out of the family cottage and left to raise her nine brothers and sisters by herself.And I really, really liked it and found it actually quite difficult to put down, but now I'm hard-pressed to find the right things to say about my reading experience.
