About this deal

Lovely on a hot day, or any day, serve yourself a double measure with tonic, ice, slice and a berry or two, safe in the knowledge you’ll stay completely clear-headed. This brand-new “no and low” range is a way for Clubbers to experiment with even more tasty new tipples! However, don’t go in expecting not to taste the difference between gin and their alcohol-free cousins; even apart from the lack of warmth from the alcohol, they are noticeably different drinks. Some non-alcoholic spirits are made using the same process as for low-ABV ones: with a neutral grain spirit and botanicals being added to a still, which then go through multiple rounds of distillation to remove all the alcohol from the liquid. If you’ve tried the likes of Gordon’s alcohol-free gin, or Tanqueray alcohol-free gin, then it’s time to try some craft alcohol-free gin!

Conker Spirit from Dorset has turned its hand to making something for the sober crew – and we rather like it. On the one hand, the strong scents and flavours of sweet orange, lemon and bitter orange give a clear citrus gin-like profile, but some found the citrus character overpowering. However, others don’t use any base spirit at all, and instead rely on maceration, a process where botanicals are left to ‘soak’ in a liquid until they develop a flavour not dissimilar to real gin. Here at Craft Gin Club, whilst it’s often gin o’clock, sometimes we gin-lovers just fancy a low - or no - alcoholic cocktail. This is why it is probably worth spending a little bit more, and choosing beverages from a trusted craft gin distiller, when selecting your no- or low-ABV ‘gin’; hopefully, it’s a sign that your drink will have been crafted with real care and premium ingredients. This is because the process really relies on the distillation of an alcoholic base spirit to the point where all the alcohol has evaporated.

We invite a few gin fans who also enjoy an occasional alcohol-free version to test the gins with us to allow a wider spectrum of taste preferences. The spirit is then blended with classic woody botanicals – rosemary, sage and cascarilla bark – and aromats such as cardamom, lemongrass and orange, to create a complex sip. Using botanical ingredients to make macerated spirits, this Fresh Citrus variety is a heady mix of orange, lemon, grapefruit and a wallop of mandarin, plus plenty of fire from ginger extract and more than a pinch of cayenne, giving this gin that alcohol-burn without the alcohol. CleanCo has a few non-alcoholic gin replacements in its lineup, but the Clean G Rhubarb is our favourite. We look for classic – or inventive – gin aromas and flavours on the nose and on the palate, with extra points for those that have a real, authentic alcoholic smell and taste to them – harder than it sounds to achieve. However, others found the absence of alcohol very noticeable: there’s none of that tell-tale burn that you get with gin, something the brand hasn’t attempted to recreate with the addition of any warming spices. And the reason for this is because the process to make such drinks – perfecting the blend, distillation, and then removing the alcohol – can be as involved as it is with the real stuff.

So, one the base spirit and the botanicals have been added to the still, the liquid is heated, and the alcohol vapour created from the heating separates from the water, capturing the flavours of the botanicals as it moves through a series of tubes. It would be very difficult to make alcohol-free gin at home unless you happen to own a miniature still! Great in cocktails such as a Paloma or Tom Collins, or simply mixed with tonic, it should be no surprise to discover that Crossip has found its way onto menus at eateries Dishoom, Coppa Club and Daisy Green.Get started with a gin and tonic or your favourite cocktail to take these liquor-free libations for a spin. Many are now being produced by gin distillers, and use many of the same processes as are involved in the creation of real gin. These low-alcohol gins are usually around 4% ABV, which becomes negligible once it’s mixed with tonic water or other soft drinks. We know our community of gin lovers are adventurous - that’s why Clubbers love the surprise each month of discovering and tasting all the exciting new snacks and drinks in their Gin of the Month boxes (many of which are rare and exclusive).
