About this deal

When Richard announced that King was involved in book three, I realized it would be a bit odd to have books one and three sitting on my shelf but not book two. The story begins in 1974 in Castle Rock, Maine — ground zero of the Stephen King fictional universe — and ends, more than 50 years later, in outer space. At the same time, her periodic stewardship of the Button Box brings its own share of stresses and responsibilities. Sadly more lecherous old Congressmen and a dangerously enraged President makes life as a US Representative challenging.

But when the button box suddenly reappears in her life, she must decide if she is willing to risk everything for its temptations. Congresswoman Gwendy Peterson is a beacon of kindness and candor in Congress where these traits light up amidst the ever-growing shadowy spaces besieging Washington. And in the thrilling conclusion Gwendy’s Final Task, evil forces seek to possess the button box and it is up to Senator Gwendy Peterson to keep it from them at all costs. As the forces of chaos and discord reveal themselves, it becomes clear that the Gwendy saga is part of a larger, overarching fictional universe: the world of King’s Dark Tower. The box itself is a mahogany artifact with levers at each end and eight color-coded buttons across the top. Richard and Stephen did a wonderful job of creating a story together that had all of the elements that I look for when reading these days. The levers dispense treats: exquisite animal-shaped chocolates and vintage silver dollars minted in 1891.

Now examine the character of a person who, despite being told her caretaking of the Button Box has rewards, is savvy enough to believe that there is a cost too and so she does not abuse the power she inherits. It didn’t feel rushed but it also didn’t feel like it was all that necessary to the global aspect of the story. As the final volume opens, the world has changed — and darkened — considerably, and Gwendy’s role as guardian has changed as well. The precipitating event is an encounter between Gwendy, then a determined, slightly overweight 12-year-old, and an enigmatic stranger named Richard Farris, who may not be entirely human. The vivid memories come back strongly and a thought torments Gwendy: what role has the Button Box played in the outcomes of her life, of her successes and failures?

Gwendy’s Magic Feather: Richard Chizmar {Book Review} Gwendy’s Magic Feather: Richard Chizmar

The Button Box itself has grown increasingly unpredictable, as though reflecting the instability of the outside world. Let us go back Back to Gwendy’s Button Box for a minute, as it is vital to understanding the 37-year-old Gwendy that appears in Chizmar’s novel. Quick, succinct chapters that moved the story along and helped push the emotions that really control most of this story. The SST edition is illustrated, oversized, is signed by Richard Chizmar and all contributors, including the wraparound cover and interior artist Vincent Sammy, the author of the afterword Bev Vincent, and the Castle Rock mapmaker, artist Glenn Chadbourne; this is another stunner!Gwendy’s Magic Feather is a modern fairy tale fit for the Brothers Grimm updated to slice like a twentieth century switchblade! Gwendy is like no character I know of and her stories are a great example of contemporary speculative fiction that delves its own niche far into the realms of fiction.

Chizmar’s work has been translated into more than fifteen languages throughout the world, and he has appeared at numerous conferences as a writing instructor, guest speaker, panelist, and guest of honor.

When this was announced as book two of the trilogy, I still held off, as I wasn’t sure if book three would just be a Chizmar book with King’s blessing again. He has won two World Fantasy awards, four International Horror Guild awards, and the HWA’s Board of Trustee’s award. The first book in the series is Gwendy’s Button Box, co-authored by Stephen King and Richard Chizmar, and if you have NOT read Gwendy’s Button Box, STOP HERE and go read that novella now! For this final volume, the prolific King has rejoined the narrative, and the result is the longest, strangest, most satisfying installment in the trilogy. Gwendy has such strong feelings of empathy, despite a dim world, and so she grows up and is a strong woman that can tackle anything.
