About this deal

I lost interest after reading that and skimmed through the rest, but the book did not redeem itself. It's a good source of basic easily to digest 'fitness' information that in very simple terms tries to dispel the pseudo-science and blatant marketeering tactics of the fitness industry.

Not a Diet Book By James Smith |The Works

He talks about changing your life and your mindset, sometimes letting go of wanting to reach the perfect streak and not focusing on the photos you see online. My personal view is it is a helpful, informative good read that would ultimately benefit from a deficit of James. Here's the thing with books about losing weight/getting in shape - there are as many opinions, methods and approaches, as people, who preach about them. Good general guidlines to living life in a different manner and not following a script that makes you unhappy. Then you need to perceive someones activity level (how active someone is on a daily basis), to understand how many calories somebody would burn on top of that 70 per cent. It's more of an inspirational, educational, self-helpy kind of book with a lot of nutritional and fitness science thrown in for good measure. All I saw were people saying that he was talking about social media and just packing a bag and travelling.

Not a Life Coach: Push Your Boundaries. Unlock Your Pot… Not a Life Coach: Push Your Boundaries. Unlock Your Pot…

These blue tick Instagrammers who sell glute programmes and glute bands and make a tremendous amount of money have never even personal trained someone before – I’m like hold on a second guys why are people taking your word for it when you aren’t even qualified? But this is like saying the key to financial freedom is to save more money than to manage the amount being earned vs spent. You will come away from this book with a LOT more information, a much improved fitness industry Bullshit Detector, and a more positive outlook on your prospects for achieving and maintaining a lifestyle that works for you.Fantastic book if you’re looking for a kick up the arse or reassurance that you should do that thing you’re scared to do. Found a few interesting ideas such as James' philosophy on social media use but the majority of this book can be summarized as poor regurgitation of original personal development bestsellers such as "4-hour workweek", "Atomic Habits", "The Subtle Art Of Not Giving A F*ck" etc. It reads more conversationally than I personally like from a non fiction book but I can see how this would be helpful for people who don’t normally read non fiction. If you ask my mum and dad who don’t have social media, they completely understand how fat loss works. l'll start by saying I find James Smith equal parts funny and annoying (mostly from his social media posts), and I'll happily admit that I bought this book to see whether the hype was worth it.

Not a Diet Book by James Smith | Waterstones

Before qualifying as a personal trainer in 2014, James worked in the corporate world and like many others with an interest in health fitness, he too was confused by all the misinformation that surrounded the fitness world. Just a solid understanding that people need to live their lives and an approach that lets them take more control over their own life without being dragged in by marketing, spin or bullshit. It’s getting to the root of why you always wear black; why you get undressed in the dark; why eating the foods you love make you feel guilty; why you’re afraid to step into the gym; why your confidence is at an all-time low; and how all of this is having a negative impact upon all areas of your life, relationships and happiness.I hated that type of exercise and missed having a slice of bloody bread, so eventually I realised this couldn’t be right.

Now when we diet, we’re choosing to engage in small period of starving ourselves and ideally, we should do it slowly to manage the symptoms of hunger, fatigue, being irritable and poorer performance. By no means concise, “Not a diet book” is however educational and honest and James does well to dismantle the many fads and fitness fables he has encountered in his career as he simplifies over complicated jargon and a health industry repackaging the concept of fat loss = calorie deficit.I can, however, imagine this book resonating well with readers who enjoy listening to motivational speakers. A photo won’t lie and if you really can’t see a difference get your mate to have a look, and if they can’t see a difference (and it’s been at least four weeks), well then maybe it isn’t working and you need to change your programme or trainer. Just that "Don't compare yourself to others" "Know your values, what you want and what you don't want" He shares a lot of his own life-experiences and interests as well, making it come across like part memoir, part self-help too.
