About this deal

Its picture quality remains outstanding with both native 4K and upscaled HD, while a plethora of gaming options, along with the new Game Optimizer menu, makes this a great display for joystick junkies as well as a movie maestro.

But because there’s no ‘Goldilocks’ setting as there often is on Sony TVs, you’ll need to experiment with the TruMotion options so see which works best for you. The apps that are there are nicely presented and quick to access, thanks to LG’s webOS platform, which is similar this year to last.Kicking off with the Dolby Vision 4K Blu-ray of It, we’re immediately impressed by the performance of the OLED55CX. Everything is tested by our dedicated team of in-house reviewers in our custom-built test rooms in London, Reading and Bath. We’ve already tested and loved it at the new 48in size, but is it similarly superb at this more cinematic scale? Having won over home cinema fans with its OLEDs, LG has its sights set on wooing gamers even more than previous models.

There’s good clarity to dialogue and effects, and the Dolby Atmos mode creates quite a large and spacious soundstage. Measurements at the various window sizes up to 100% white field yielded a peak brightness of 707 nits on the 10% window and 124 nits on a full 100% window. The C1 supports almost all of the HDR formats including HDR10, HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma), Dolby Vision and Dolby Vision IQ, it doesn’t support HDR10+ or HDR10+ Adaptive, but given the lack of content in that format, we don’t see that as a negative. Black levels are strong with shadow detail that is visible and adds depth to the image, creating some exceptionally breathtaking images that we have come to expect from OLED. This is supposed to make motion smooth but with a natural look and for some material it certainly works well.Other than some minor differences that could be put down to sample variation, it’s the same excellent performance we’ve already seen from the larger OLED65GX and smaller OLED48CX. The C1 does all of this while also offering excellent value for money given the feature count and performance levels vs. We also didn’t notice any issues with excessive black dither from normal viewing distances, making fade to and from black look exceptionally fluid. The screen has volume – output is rated at 40W cumulative - and boasts Dolby Atmos decoding, but the physical speaker configuration is limited by the set’s cabinet design. LG’s AI Picture Pro picture system has had a deep learning performance bump this season which allows it to better optimise and analyse images in real time; it seems HD upscaling is also a beneficiary.
