Visually, it does not appear to be a large step up from the version of Madden 21 that ran on the PS4 Pro or Xbox One X, though it is noticeably smoother when running in the 60fps Performance Mode (or 120fps on Xbox Series X). This, in turn, hampers its player avatar – a decent idea that feels more confusing than it should owing to how opaque even basic functions like character progression can be. In a practical sense, this means it will move at a slightly faster pace, but cutback animations and jukes in particular will feel less refined. I feel like we’re still waiting on the sort of visual leap that will make us say, “wow, this looks so much better than the PS4 and Xbox One X versions.

The impact of the story choices you do get to make, such as when you talk to scouts before the Draft, are hazy at best. It wants to be an in-depth sim and a silly arcade game and a competitive multiplayer game, and it wants to do all of it with roughly 10 months of development time per year. Homefield advantage is a solid addition, but it doesn’t quite capture the true extent of real on-field momentum swings.Elsewhere, Madden NFL 22 has effectively thrown up an “under construction” sign, acknowledging that the much-needed scouting overhaul for career mode won’t be available until after launch.

I could be wrong, as there may be a deeper meaning and driver behind the scenes, but in Year 2 of the implementation of this tech, I’m not seeing a positive impact on user experience.This game isn't without its shortcomings however, and there are some things that I would love to see handled better such as overall player likeness (more face scan inclusions, updated body types, better/more realistic equipment, etc. The deep passes into single-coverage no longer feel like as much of a crap shoot, and more like a battle of positioning and timing. Aside from the addition of coordinators and player personnel, there isn’t much that is new in Madden 22. Superfans will be in the stadium: Back in the days of Madden 12, crowd close-up shots were a major part of the game's presentation, only fading away when the PS4 and Xbox One rolled around. You are introduced to a diverse and inclusive cast of characters, but nothing actually happens with them.
