About this deal

For non-magical adventure, award-winning YA author Nic Stone turns her hand to writing for younger readers in Clean Getaway (Knights of Media). The main characters are so well written, and it’s impossible not to take them into your heart and root for them with everything you have.

Monstrous Devices: THE TIMES CHILDREN’S BOOK OF THE WEEK

Bernard Herrmann is probably best known for his music for Alfred Hitchcock’s movies, but he wrote this piece for the snowy ending of Francois Truffaut’s 1966 adaptation of Fahrenheit 451, and it’s among his most beautiful compositions. Your selection was perfect for our children and what really made the difference was your ability to engage with each child, discuss their interests and help them to choose a suitable book based on your extensive knowledge of the books you were selling. I enjoyed everything about Damien Love’s debut–its title, its breakneck action, its sly sense of humor. Time and time again Alex and his grandfather have to defend themselves from the robots and the girl who unleashes them. The disturbing Tall Man and vicious Zia are back with an even more dangerous, creepier robot army than before. As soon as I started reading, I was absorbed into Love’s world of robots and powerful, horrible magic – it really doesn’t shy away from the gruesome or frightening. There’s also the added bonus that young fans of his stories have not only an extensive series of Goosebumps books to enjoy, but dozens of awesome stories to move on to when they’ve outgrown those. There's a lot of action, between the chasing and the getting chased, of Alex and his grandfather - but no serious violence, so it would be appropriate for most ages. As they encounter one life-threatening situation after another, Alex starts to get some answers about his dead father, his grandfather's past, and why these missions are so important.

There’s a lot that Alex’s grandfather hasn’t told him, such as the history of the robot, the treasure hidden within, and the unsettling familiarity of the tall man and the girl who chase them. When the cake on the C page goes missing, a pugnacious bear accuses several suspects (“K is for Kite. When Scoob’s outrageous grandma kidnaps him and sweeps him away on a campervan tour of the landmarks of her past, guided by the “Green Book” that once told African Americans where they could safely travel, Scoob isn’t expecting a series of shattering revelations about his grandfather’s past, his grandma’s secret weakness, and his own father’s love.I enjoyed everything about Damien Love’s debut – its title, its breakneck action, its sly sense of humour. Parents need to know that Monstrous is a 1950s-set psychological horror thriller about Laura (Christina Ricci), a mother on the run who's taking her son to a quaint country town where she believes they can move past traumatizing events.

Your words, like your reviews, bring books to life and give them a voice before the front cover is even turned. A delightful dachshund is the star of the splendidly comic and atmospheric Paolo, Emperor of Rome (Abrams), by Mac Barnett and Claire Keane.Bookish twelve-year-old Alex’s story begins with him enduring nasty messages from bullies at school, and then he receives a tin robot in the post, accompanied by a mysterious message that reads, “This one is special”. Of course there is the evil villain, the hero and one of the more interesting aspects of this fast paced story is that it is based around history; that of the Golem of Prague, where folklore has it that squat clay figures made by Rabbi Judah Loew of Prague (known as the Maharal; 1525-1609) in an attempt to protect the Jews of Prague from anti-semitic attacks, came to life.

This local hymn is something that might be overheard coming from an old church as they go hurrying through the Old Town. My own preferences meant I slogged through the book all the while becoming excited at the possibilities it afforded for the classroom.

Monstrous Devices from Damien Love is aimed directly at the young teen reader market and as the contents of the storyline are almost too real at times, making this one very scary book; a little judicious direction from parents could be considered as very helpful, especially if the child is one that still occasionally finds monsters under the bed! Do not wait till tomorrow”) and its clear, calm emphasis on the power and worth of the individual feel salutary when many books continue to celebrate only a Disneyfied, homogeneous version of beauty. The story was resolved (no spoilers), however it would be possible for a sequel, based on how events played out. But the setting is compelling, the story is intriguing on the whole, and there is a lot for me to like about a middle-grade novel that doesn't flinch at getting a little dark; kids need scary/thrilling stories, too.
