About this deal

Anyway, this might sound morbid, but it's my kind of guilty pleasure to read about these things and the way this book was written couldn't have been more perfect.

I really enjoyed this, despite most of the information was something I knew before especially up to Tudors so there wasn't much new info there for me. I thought this might be worth a read until I saw the author's TikTok, where she repeats the red-hot poker myth of Edward II's demise in 1327 in a video as though it's a definite fact, even though she herself admits in the comments that it's a much later story and is almost certainly untrue. Obviously it can be a bit dark, some people didn't die peacefully in their beds after all, but it has a tinge of dark humour throughout. From cancer, gout, arrows in the eye and the ocasional regicide, many manners of death are discussed, always with an introduction of the monarch itself beforehand. between books, between laundry and bed, between morning and afternoon during your daily lunch break at work. Suzie Edge, who excellently reads her own book, takes each king from William I through George VI and explains in detail how they died - with some extras like Henry VIII’s wives thrown in.

From the bloody fascinating story behind Oliver Cromwell's demise and the subsequent treatment of his corpse and whether the arrow William II caught in the chest was an accident or murder, to Henry IV's remarkable skin condition and the red-hot poker up Edward II's rear end, Mortal Monarchs captivates, grosses-out and informs.Henry VIII gets a second episode in which Charlie Higson tells the story of Katherine, Anne, Jane, Anne, Catherine and Katherine. While some books don’t do well being read by the author, I enjoyed the audible version of this book, and felt Dr. If that's all you know about the most famous of all our Kings, then listen on as Charlie Higson uncovers Henry's life in the first part of a story that is so epic, it requires.

So we get a blink-and-you-miss-it 'this might not actually be true' disclaimer (that hardly anyone even notices) while describing the story in loving detail, and failing even to mention the numerous other chronicle accounts of Edward's death, or the fact that he might not even have died in 1327 at all.

The English is clunky, the humour is worse and seriously, the prurience in some of the entries, even after the author herself says that recorded causes of death often spoke to the monarch's life and reign, was childish. Yes I need to move across the ocean, but that takes money, and I’m currently spending all of my on stitch fix don’t judge.
