One alumnus wrote her first draft during November, edited and polished it in December, got it typeset and ready to go in January, and published at the end of January.

In fact, I think these days doggedly pursuing the traditional publishers is more like vanity publishing. Riot Grrrls were into feminism, obviously, but up until this moment in the gym I didn't think of them as feminists so much as super cool girls who took no shit. As my classmates offer up a collective groan and I fish around in my backpack for my book, Lucy regains some sort of courage and pipes up. Davies spits, more enthusiastic about disciplining Lucy than he ever seemed to be about the gold light behind the blue curtains. Lucy is brave and fierce and confident – she is Black and gay and shows a level of awareness and strength that Vivian wouldn’t have had to learn, while Lucy has.A March Madness kind of competition is held each year to find the "Most F--kable" girl in the junior or senior class. Viv’s mom was a punk rock Riot Grrrl in the ’90s, so now Viv takes a page from her mother’s past and creates a feminist zine that she distributes anonymously to her classmates. I swerved away from a successful copywriting and marketing business to do what I do now: help the most incredible, weird, and wonderful people tell their stories with grace and passion so the world sits up and listens.

The two admit they inspire each other – it’s her mum and not Seth she goes to when she steps down from the podium – an important, powerful and perfect moment between the two, acknowledging the work of former generations of feminists at the same time as celebrating the progress the new generation is making. Who should be punished for breaking school dress code: a girl who wears a scoop-neck shirt or a guy who wears a t-shirt with a big arrow pointing to bellow his waist and words "Free Breathalyzer Test Blow Here"? She’s a fighter, she’s passionate, she always stands her ground on a topic she has feelings on, but she also deals with the insecurities of having friends that may not totally agree with you and not wanting to be labeled as someone who creates problems or goes against the group. In the very first issue, she encourages readers to draw hearts and stars on their hands as a secret nod to one another — no doubt a tribute to some of the symbols of the Riot grrrl punk movement that her mother was part of — and finds some immediate support from fellow students like Amaya (Anjelika Washington), Kiera (Sydney Park), and, of course, Lucy. It's not just Vivian who decides to drop her anonymity during the big walkout; Emma Johnson (Josephine Langford) also comes forward to share her horrifying account of being sexually assaulted by Mitchell after the previous year's prom. When we first start the story, Vivian has a few problematic views on things, but she is open to listening and learning. An introvert, she wants to get through the rest of her time at Rockport High without drawing unnecessary attention towards herself. I definitely feel like I was right, when I watched it (a couple of weeks ago now, around when it came out), I ended up feeling similarly to when I finished the book.

Joan Jett scampers off after me, wailing away as I head to the back bedroom where I find a mountain of laundry in the middle of my mother’s unmade bed. I'd like to thank my mother for raising me with the knowledge that she she would disown me if I ever did something like that, and I'd like to thank my dad for backing her up. She’s an example of those with an attitude that doesn’t take feminism seriously, arguing that there are more pressing problems. Vivian correctly feels that the school’s policies are unfairly tilted in favor of male athletes like Mitchell. He doesn’t understand that Moxie isn’t—wasn’t—just a fun thing I did to be cool or different like his old hipster friends in Austin. While the book doesn't promote turning the other cheek regarding people who willfully ignore sexism (or any other relevant -ism), it does promote giving people the chance to learn and grow, and that is so important! That last in particular is a real shame as the fear the girls have could have had a real impact on screen. Where do you think the line should be drawn: When is it just boys joking around with girls and when does it cross the line into harassment?

Moxie by Jennifer Mathieu | Waterstones

It stars Hadley Robinson, Alycia Pascual-Peña, Lauren Tsai, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Nico Hiraga, and Poehler. His fellow football-player minions laugh like it’s the freshest, most original bit of comedy ever, even though all of them have been using this line since last spring. Viv’s reaction to her mum’s boyfriend is more nuanced in the book, and also comes to a more sensitive end. By the end of the movie, Moxie has become a club that's about more than just Vivian's zines; it's a full-on movement. Foul is Fair by Hannah Capin – inspired by Shakespeare, this is a gloriously vicious tale of a girl getting her own back after sexual assault. Please note, I am unable to typeset complex or image-heavy books, so if you’re not sure, speak to me first. You can attend live or send your work/questions and watch the recording later, whenever it’s convenient for you. Their loud boy voices, laced with Mountain Dew and the knowledge that the world belongs to them, ring through the halls, echoing off the walls, making my skin crawl. And Vivian's own boyfriend Seth (Nico Hiraga) also appears to be willing to make amends after their big fight, too. I loved Seth and I think the placement of a hot high school guy that doesn't think like the jerks was a great thing.
