The two admit they inspire each other – it’s her mum and not Seth she goes to when she steps down from the podium – an important, powerful and perfect moment between the two, acknowledging the work of former generations of feminists at the same time as celebrating the progress the new generation is making. Who should be punished for breaking school dress code: a girl who wears a scoop-neck shirt or a guy who wears a t-shirt with a big arrow pointing to bellow his waist and words "Free Breathalyzer Test Blow Here"? She’s a fighter, she’s passionate, she always stands her ground on a topic she has feelings on, but she also deals with the insecurities of having friends that may not totally agree with you and not wanting to be labeled as someone who creates problems or goes against the group.In the very first issue, she encourages readers to draw hearts and stars on their hands as a secret nod to one another — no doubt a tribute to some of the symbols of the Riot grrrl punk movement that her mother was part of — and finds some immediate support from fellow students like Amaya (Anjelika Washington), Kiera (Sydney Park), and, of course, Lucy. It's not just Vivian who decides to drop her anonymity during the big walkout; Emma Johnson (Josephine Langford) also comes forward to share her horrifying account of being sexually assaulted by Mitchell after the previous year's prom. When we first start the story, Vivian has a few problematic views on things, but she is open to listening and learning. An introvert, she wants to get through the rest of her time at Rockport High without drawing unnecessary attention towards herself. I definitely feel like I was right, when I watched it (a couple of weeks ago now, around when it came out), I ended up feeling similarly to when I finished the book.

While the book doesn't promote turning the other cheek regarding people who willfully ignore sexism (or any other relevant -ism), it does promote giving people the chance to learn and grow, and that is so important! That last in particular is a real shame as the fear the girls have could have had a real impact on screen. Where do you think the line should be drawn: When is it just boys joking around with girls and when does it cross the line into harassment?
