Axl Rose from Guns N' Roses, and Ian Astbury, Billy Duffy, and Mickey Curry, all from The Cult - which Matt Sorum played with both before and after Guns N' Roses - all also made guest appearances on the Steve Jones solo album Fire and Gasoline. The album’s first single Jerk is a standard self-deprecating Jones’ track where he proclaims “I’m a jerk” as a chorus. We had a fun time making that record and I think it could’ve done well if we’d all been around to give it a proper push. As enthusiasm for the band increased, they were signed to Maverick Records, releasing one album, the self-titled Neurotic Outsiders, in 1996. Comprised of no frills, guitar-drenched, cracking rock n’ roll tunes, most of the originals were unheard material leftover from Jones’ time in Sex Pistols and The Professionals. It somehow turned out that possibly a chance a pickup band Jones formed for a benefit concert for a cancer-stricken friend in LA sometime in mid-nineties would turn out to be one of his better musical statements in the post-Pistols era. Clear, concise, and straight to the point with no bluffing, but a lot of rock excess, as rock excess should sound like.
