These three views—Wilson's non-messianic retrospective of the Davidic covenant, Brueggemann's sapiential instruction, and Mitchell's eschatologico-messianic programme—all have their followers, although the sapiential agenda has been somewhat eclipsed by the other two. It is noteworthy that, on the breaking up of the original ode, each portion crept twice into the Psalter: Psalm 14 = 53, Psalm 70 = 40:14–18. Individual psalms were written as far back in history as Moses’s time, through the time of David, Asaph, and Solomon, to the time of the Ezrahites who most likely lived after the Babylonian captivity, meaning the writing of the book spans one thousand years. You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance. This prayer is really nothing other than a psalm of thanksgiving: it begins by saying “I have triumphed over my enemies,” and then continues to praise God’s awesome power in the world. The Hebrew name of the book, Tehillim (תהילים), means "praises", as it contains many praises and supplications to God.

There are three interpretations: [69] (a) According to Rashi and others, this term stems from the root shegaga, meaning "mistake"—David committed some sin and is singing in the form of a prayer to redeem himself from it; (b) shigayon was a type of musical instrument; (c) Ibn Ezra considers the word to mean "longing", as for example in the verse in Proverbs 5:19 [70] tishge tamid. A superscript in Psalm 51 tells us that David wrote this psalm after Prophet Nathan came to him and pronounced judgment on him after he had Uriah killed to get Bathsheba. And it should be noted that Hannah does not simply go straight to the sanctuary to pray; she is there because she and her family have just been offering their annual sacrifices.The most valuable thing the Psalms do for me is to express the same delight in God which made David dance. The word Selah, found seventy-one times, is most likely a musical notation added by worship leaders after the Israelites incorporated the psalm into public worship. We learn about the musical instruments they used and the ancient names of nations and tribes that have prospered and died.
