It's not a bad book per se, and I'm sure it will appeal to some fans of mythology and history, although I'm one of them, and unfortunately, it failed with me.

However, the striking linocut illustrations that accompany the text are wonderful and, in fact, would make an attractive book in their own right. The Loopy Lab contains an indoor playground full of foam balls, giant vacuums and hoses, and compressed air cannons. These are retellings of medieval tales of legend, landscape and the yearning to belong, inhabited with characters now half-remembered: Brutus, Albina, Scota, Arthur and Bladud among them.This gorgeous book should live on the bookshelves in every house that cares about the idea of Britain, what is was and where it came from. The juxtaposition with the narrator’s reflections on modern life and the speed of change is brilliantly judged in Marilyn Booth’s agile translation from Arabic.

Elegant retellings of Britain's origin legends sit alongside Jeffs' captivating artworks, which I like so much that I have two hanging in my office. In 1981 the Pirate Ship was the first boat attraction that brought families on a fun filled adventure through Buccaneer Bay! Jeffs takes the job of retelling the myths so seriously that instead of feeling like I'm being immersed in and shown the wondrous world of these legends, they read like I'm being told a whole lot of blah with all the magic drained out of it.

I had to stop the audiobook many times to look the locations up, which makes me wish even more that I had read the physical book. Here the writing's not particularly exciting or evocative so I was reading it for the actual folklore and didn't really want interpolations and alterations. So I gleefully paw my way through any new anthology when it appears – looking for something fresh, some tale or insight I’ve yet to discover, all the while hoping that each new book that arrives will inspire others to fall in love with the foundation stories which shape the remarkable tale of human life. The museum also included an exhibit where guests could ride a Segway, since the manufacturer was based in Bedford, NH.
