About this deal

This smartly adds a new angle for a self-contained story, while also expanding on the world-building of the cafe. In a small back alley in Tokyo, there is a café which has been serving carefully brewed coffee for more than one hundred years.

In this story, like in the first act of the original novel, we’re being introduced to the cafe’s workers as background noise. Before he was homeless, Gohtaro was quite well-off, having inherited his father’s company that made over one hundred million yen a year. At times the constant repetition of the rules got a bit irritating, but on the whole I enjoyed this a lot more than the last one.By using the Web site, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to be bound by the Terms and Conditions.

I was so incredibly excited when I heard that the other books in the Before the Coffee Gets Cold series by Toshikazu Kawaguchi were going to be translated into English!curiously this feels like an ancient book because the theme is reconciliation with your dead, that you can reconcile with your departed loved ones provided you and they observe the strict rules of time travel and go on to live your life in a new way. One issue as with the first book is that the author seems to think the readers have short term memory and tends to remind us time and again about the rules of the cafe. He would knead his clay and dream of the day when he would be an acclaimed potter with his own studio. This first story, The Best Friend, has all the makings of a real tearjerker, with Gotaro being a sweet, sensitive soul who only wants what he believes to be best for his daughter. Translated by Geoffrey Trousselot, Tales from the Café continues to follow the staff from Café Funiculi Funicula, some familiar faces, and some new to us.

A terminally ill man travels to the future to see the woman he loved and to ensure that she leads a happy life and not allow his death to prevent her from finding happiness. As is the case with the first book, there are four heart-tugging connected stories that explore life’s challenges and delve deeply into the characters.
