The detail is rich and the descriptions are lush, and this world that Anderson has created gets bigger with every piece of dialogue and description, and no doubt you will feel the same. His bushy fox-tail remains, curving up from beneath his coat, and his fluffy, triangular fox ears stay pricked up attentively on the top of his head.

I can’t even see the wooden floor I helped sweep yesterday, because it’s buried beneath a mound of debris. You want to understand things, so you build ideas of what the world is in your minds, then reject anything that doesn’t fit into that. The premise of this reminded me a lot of The Bear and the Nightingale, as well as the more traditional Ruslan And Ludmilla: A Novel In Verse with its incorporation of Slavic spirits of the hearth (the domovoi), wider elementals and an evil wizard. My personal favourites would be Deg a type of tree creature, and Feliks who is a fox spirit who protects the castle, and is a very important ally to Olia throughout the novel.Thank you to NetGalley and Usborne for approving me to read an early copy of this in exchange for my honest opinion. Excitement is fizzing up from deep inside me, but my stomach is flipping with nerves too, because I’m not sure that I’m ready for whatever this thing is. I take three running strides, then skid along the corridor, my woollen socks sliding over the smooth spruce floorboards quicker than skates over ice.

With this being one of my most anticipated reads of the year, it's very safe to say that Anderson did not disappoint with this addition to her luscious written world, and I am thrilled to have read this absolute masterpiece. Her love for her family and curiosity towards adventure are enough to propel her as a 400-page leading lady without us ever feeling disconnected from her. The wooden box on my dresser catches my eye and I open it to look at the patch I made for the family blanket.
I've DNF-ed two books in a row which I've never done before, so I do think its a bit of a 'it's me not you' situation with this book.
