So many great performances, and I was thrilled to hear genuine North East actors and accents which, along with the music and sound effects, brought authenticity to the whole story. I loved the sound effects, the production as a whole and it really felt like I was listening to a TV programme in the background. Met cop DI Rob Marshall is hot on the trail of the serial killer known as the Chameleon, who has abducted, tortured and killed a series of young women in Northwest London.I don't know if it is lj ross or the director/script editor who is to blame, but the cliches; literary, voiceover, regional, gender, class, mental health all got regular clunking appearances. I have listened to all of the DC Ryan books on audible and each time I finish one I can’t wait to listen to the next one. Now, if you know the series, you will know there are some things, including the killer's moniker, that I have left out of that description. He’s just had word that John Dobbs, the prime suspect in a murder case, has jumped off the Tyne Bridge while being approached by two police officers.

The Infirmary (DCI Ryan Mysteries series prequel) by L.J

The first three crime thrillers in the Detective Sebastian Clifford series together in a single collection for the first time. When the ancient waters of Lady’s Well in the rural village of Holystone begin to run red, it seems to be a nasty Hallowe’en prank and nothing more. When the officer in charge of the case turns up dead, it falls upon Detective Chief Inspector Ryan to take up the baton and find the person responsible. It was interesting to learn more about other recurring characters like Denise MacKenzie and Constable Jack Lowerson as well. I have read all of L J Ross's DCI Ryan books so far (except The Hermitage and I'm waiting for the audio version to come out) and when I heard about this one I was so excited. Hermione Norris as the narrator, and the rest of the cast are all excellent and bring the story to life.

It gives good grounding before heading into the written series as to how Ryan came to be on Holy Island in the first place, although bear in mind that if this is the first 'book' you engage with, there will be elements of Holy Island which will not be as big a surprise when you do read it. There is a verisimilitude in her writing in both the story and the characters that make the books such a pleasure to read. Ross used her husband’s name when she was creating her pseudonym, the idea being to honor him for all the support he had provided her during her pursuit of a publishing career.
