The Wingmen play a plethora of musical hits including tunes from the 50s, right up to the modern day current favourites. Looking every inch the part, a leather jacketed and flat capped Baz Warne then stepped up to the mic for ‘ Last Cigarette’, as the band worked their way through each song on the album in sequence. Afterwards, all of the band members graciously came out to speak with the fans, sign merch and pose for selfies – they are genuinely ecstatic at the positive reception the album has had, and the public enthusiasm for this tour. Strutting, almost pop music – given the personnel, I probably shouldn’t say it reminded me of the recent Hugh Cornwell record, but it does, the choruses, though, are much catchier and it sounds like everyone had fun making this, even though they were all apart. I do like a bit of throw back to the heydays of the 60’s/70’s/80’s when it comes to taking shots of bands.

For those of us who’d been listening to the album, it was an absolute treat to hear the songs live – if anything they sound even better!

Some of us felt the effects of the enforced isolation from friends and loved ones that followed – and wondering when the hell it was all gonna end – more keenly than others. A Stranglers song was played as one of several covers, ‘ Long Black Veil’ from 2004 album ‘ Norfolk Coast’, which Baz dedicated to his late bandmate Dave Greenfield’s widow Pam, who was in attendance. I Would If I Could opens with somewhat ethereal sounds before exploding into a Stones style riff which runs right through the song together with a great melodic chorus line underpinned by a great bassline from Paul Gray. He also explained why Wingmen track ‘ Backstage At The Opera’ was so named – it appeared in the dialogue in an episode of The Sweeney – “ It’s all mi mi mi (me me me) backstage at the opera!Louis Smoked The Bible rolls along with a staccato rhythm dominated by the sinister tones of Baz’s trademark vocals and jazzed up with a trumpet and sax. The album is a true collaboration inasmuchas none of us knew what parts or melodies or lyrics might be added by anyone else – it was an immenselyexciting process!

Wingmen announce UK tour dates for 2023 - Louder Than War

Due to be released January 27 th via Cadiz Music, although Wingmen’s debut album was crafted in seclusion, there’s no doubting that the album’s ten songs, chock full of dynamic songwriting and performances, sound like a band, despite the unconventional way the album was fashioned.Wingmen are set to play their first ever live shows in January 2023, when they hit the road for a UK tour. Bassist Paul Gray adds, “Although we’d recorded various parts at our homes for our respective bands before, none of us had employed this process to make a complete album! As for the future of Wingmen, well that remains to be seen, so take the opportunity to see them now if you can. I’d only ever worked with Marty before, and up until this day we’ve never actually played in the same room together – I knew Leigh but had never met Baz. An eagerly anticipated tour by the well-known musicians of Wingmen (they tell me they dislike the term ‘punk supergroup’) touched down near Milton Keynes for their second full show last Friday – Ruth Rae was at the gate to meet them.
