About this deal

Sony XR-55A80J : Read moreWith the UK catch-up apps missing, are you able to record one programme onto a USB HDD whilst watching another channel at the same time? Otherwise, the A80J’s gaming credentials are solid, with a 16ms input lag in the game mode with a 60Hz signal. The design is well thought out, Google TV is a more accessible interface than Android TV and from a picture and sound perspective, the A80J delivers classy upscaling and colourful 4K HDR images, with a sound that’s punchier and weightier than most flatscreen efforts. Sony is committed not only to offering products, services and content that deliver exciting experiences but also to working towards our goal of a zero environmental footprint throughout our business activities. The A80J’s power input is located on the right side of the rear panel, and all the other ports are on the left.

The A80J is the step-down model from the A90J, which is still one of our favourite TVs, and this entry-level OLED covers similar ground to the 2021 flagship, the differences not quite as large as you might expect between the two. It's also excellent for watching sports due to its near-instantaneous response time, and it's fantastic for gaming as it has HDMI 2. It's impressive to use as a PC monitor, but you risk damaging the screen with burn-in after exposure to static elements. Unfortunately, like all OLED displays, there's a risk of permanent burn-in with static elements like a desktop interface. You can either type in what you want, scroll down to see general recommendations, or use Google Assistant voice controls. It has incredible reflection handling, so glare won't be an issue if you're in a room with a bit of light, but it's not bright enough to overcome intense glare. For whatever reason, Sony has decided not to jump on the Filmmaker Mode bandwagon, which is ironic considering it’s the only TV manufacturer that actually owns a movie studio.

To try to better understand how long a TV should last, we're running 100 TVs through an accelerated longevity test for the next two years. The A80J’s 120 Hz maximum refresh rate is ideal for gaming on newer consoles like the Xbox Series X or the PS5. It's fantastic for watching movies in dark rooms because it has a near-infinite contrast ratio that produces deep blacks with no distracting blooming around bright objects. The sound is also better than you’d expect, but if you’re into gaming and aren’t a PS5 owner, you may want to consider other options. But edge definition is fairly solid, with relatively less fuzziness surrounding the outlines of people and objects and the colour performance produced strong blues, verdant greens and rich-looking reds of the flowers in the garden. In a depression, facing towards the wall and requiring plugging up into the panel area, are the coaxial cable connector, an Ethernet port, the optical audio out, a port for an RS-232C remote, three additional HDMI ports, and one more USB port with a maximum 900 mA power output.

Tailor your Dolby Atmos® experience in combination with SRS-NS7 and BRAVIA XR™ to enjoy 360 Spatial Sound. Sony claims that this chip “understands how humans see and hear” and is “designed to replicate the way our brains think and respond” by simultaneously cross-analyzing the many different elements of the video and soundscape to figure out how to process them (in real time) to the highest level of quality, providing “a whole new experience that immerses you completely in the scene. Though the hard-driving action scenes in Zack Snyder’s Justice League can sometimes feel oppressive, the sound was crystalline: Whether during the frenetic final fight or in (er, relatively) more intimate moments, the clarity was outstanding whether the set was set quiet or booming. A reminder to improve recommendations by rating videos was helpfully positioned near the top of the screen.Sony threw its lot in with Google years ago, with previous TV generations running versions of Android TV. The actuators also do their usual, excellent job of tying the audio to the onscreen action – the sound is literally coming from the screen, and that gives it a directness and immediacy that most TV speaker systems lack.

The Sony also supports 4K/120Hz gaming, and under these circumstances, the input lag drops to a very respectable 9ms. The connectors for the 300x300 mm VESA mount are located there as well, in case you’d prefer your A80J hang on the wall.Whereas some TVs struggle with the early farmhouse scene in Blade Runner 2049, where chasms in contrast can rob Ryan Gosling and Dave Bautista of their facial details (and thus the scene of its pungent immediacy), the A80J kept both the blackest and the whitest parts of the scene in balance, ensuring you never miss the subtleties of actors’ expressions. For a start, there’s the previously mentioned problem of only having two inputs that support 4K/120Hz and ALLM. The A80J features the same aesthetic Sony has been pursuing with its OLEDs in the last couple of years. There are no fancy features here, just a simple and effective means of interacting with the TV’s UI.
