About this deal

To enhance that pleasure, I read it with a group of horror lovers over at Goodreads and we had a ball! My best friend Garrett — who I’ve secretly been wanting to become more than a friend — has one of these powers too. It makes sense in its own weird way and I can't imagine that it would be improved with the blanks filled in. On the minor side of things that make me a little uncomfortable with—and immediately dates—this novel; it does engage in the magical negro trope.

Volviendo a “Los elementales”, (tuve que esperar a leer más de doscientas páginas para entender por qué se llamaba así), no tengo más que palabras de admiración porque he pasado ratos de altas dosis de atención, susto y entretenimiento. We visit the terrain of those gigantic sandworms that terrified our imaginations--even in Beetlejuice: the animated series. I really liked the constant conflict between characters as it maintained the drama factor throughout the story, and it kept me hooked into the characters dynamics. The Elementals is a fantastic haunted-house tale loaded with dread, eerie moments and good characters.Opening with an ill-attended funeral in which a knife plays a lead role is one way to grab the attention, and once he has it, McDowell doesn’t let go. That struck a chord, because I tend to think of spooky tales as being a winter, chilling thing, but The Elementals is set in the extreme heat of summer and is all the more claustrophobic and hallucinatory for it. The Elementals is a southern gothic horror, which slowly builds with atmospheric descriptions of family dynamics, heat, sand and isolation. Most of the characters have some form of anxiety, which they seek to control through different measures. The Victorian mansions are wonderfully described and the Alabama sun/setting is so much of a character in this book.

Lounging in Beldame with the Savages and McCrays was blissful, but I also didn't want to read too quickly. Many of the best moments include no horror at all, but are mere depictions of this family living their unusual lives. Michael McDowell takes his time, develops the Savages and McCrays into characters you can't help but be interested it. Maybe it was due to the fact that I was really invested in this story, or that I found this scene more interesting than others, but the part where India is wandering outside on the front porch and realizes there is a face that is watching her from the window of the third house completely caught me off guard.Cuando muchos lectores hablan tan bien de una novela, cuando todos dicen lo atrapante que es, decididamente voy a una librería y la compro.
