About this deal

Forget expensive installations and hassle – the Nest Thermostat E has been designed so that pretty much everyone should find it easy to install. The new Heat Link E battery-powered bridge attaches to the wires that were used by your old wired thermostat – and that’s it. Starting from scratch, most people should have the system up and running in under an hour. If you don’t have a wired thermostat, you’ll need to have the Heat Link E wired into your boiler, which will most likely mean a professional installation. While the system supports OpenTherm for increased energy savings, at this point your best option is probably a different product. This is the set up a lot of homes will have. You can manually set the thermostat temperature, and it will turn the boiler on and off to maintain the temperature of the room it's placed in. The new intelligent thermostatic radiator valve (TRV) from Secure detects when a room is unoccupied and automatically reduces the heating to save energy. Radbot 1 uses an innovative self-learning algorithm to continually monitor and predict a room's occupancy pattern, ensuring it’s nice and warm when in use, but doesn’t waste energy heating an empty room. Don’t waste energy heating empty rooms - Save money and fit radbot 1 today. Unlike much of the tech we review, smart thermostats are one category of products that truly benefit from being tested all-year round. For this reason, our Home Technology Editor David Ludlow runs four systems in different locations on a permanent basis. This allows him to continue to compare the different smart systems as time goes by. You can also set the temperature of each room using the thermostatic radiator valves. In the diagram below:

Radbot uses a combination of sensors and an embedded learning algorithm to detect and predict room occupancy. It then heats each room to a set temperature when it is in use and automatically reduces the temperature when it is empty. This enables automated room-by-room zoning that reduces unnecessary overheating and saves energy in unoccupied zones without impacting occupant comfort. Radbot does not require scheduling via an app or WiFi connectivity. If the available wall space is minimal, consider a vertical radiator to maximise this, or even look at the spaces under windows if that is an option. There’s also a Boost button on top. Press this and the Radbot opens up the valve fully for 30 minutes, letting you warm a room faster.

I’ve blogged before about how we braced ourselves for more expensive energy bills after moving to the country. Much as I love our house, it’s far from energy efficient. Yup, the Georgians weren’t big on PVC double glazing or cavity wall insulation. You can set the temperature of each room using the thermostatic radiator valves. However, as seen on the diagram, the valves can't communicate with the smart thermostat or your smartphone, so you will have to change them manually. Ultimately, it depends what you want smart heating for to decide if it's worth getting. Smart radiator valves offer high levels of control, but that doesn't suit everyone. Smart radiator valve prosAll the smart radiator valves can communicate with the smart thermostat, meaning you can turn the boiler on and off by changing the settings of any of the heating devices. Out of our three home setups, this gives you the most complete control of your heating. I fitted the Radbots in the rooms we use most, but at different times of the day: our bedroom, the kitchen and the sitting room. My husband and I are in our bedroom overnight, then the kitchen gets used around meal times, the kids use the sitting room before school, and we all pile in during the evening. He explained that each Radbot contains three sensors, to measure changes in light, temperature and humidity. The Radbot works out when people are in a room by changes in light. Thelittle ‘calculation model’ inside then remembers when you open curtains or switch on the lights, uses artificial intelligence and algorithms to build up patterns, and adjusts the heating accordingly. Apparently they should generate their first set of data in 24 to 48 hours, then take 7 to 10 days to ‘build up an understanding of your patterns’ (ie don’t expect them to get it all right instantly). It's also worth noting here that you can use smart radiator valves without a smart thermostat, but this setup would have the same limitations of wi-fi radiator valves. We might well have seen an even higher percentage saving with Radbots fitted on more radiators. Anyone living in smaller, better insulated house might also see a higher percentage saving, if less heat escaped. How much do Radbots cost?

It also means you can optimise your system to ensure you aren’t spending excess money heating rooms that don’t need heating. If you're looking for a specific aesthetic, there are various styles and colours available that will match in with your interior. This means you can remotely set the thermostat and smart radiator valves temperatures. You can even set the exact temperature with smart radiator valves, instead of the 'rough' temperature as you do with thermostatic radiator valves. Who wants to burn cash heating their whole house to the same temperature all at the same time? We use different rooms at different times of day. Easy to fit and as far as it's been able to test it with the warm weather we've had over the last few months, they seem to be working - so waiting for some proper English summer, i.e. cold :-), to see how they perform then. As a result, Vestemi says not to use Radbots where light is limited, so they’re a no-go where you’ve got radiators behind furniture, radiator covers or the like. Radbot is recommended in the main living areas of your home: kitchen, living room and bedrooms. In addition, Radbot gets used to your interactions: when you change the temperature dial and when you hit the boost button.
