About this deal

Again, before you do this, please, please ensure that the artex you are working on does not contain any asbestos! Whenever you’re doing a home renovation project, it’s important to know what’s behind your walls—like electrical wiring, plumbing, or insulation—before you start cutting or demolishing. If you’re unsure, it’s best to consult with a professional. If you have plastered up to and around any corners these will need to be defined, including any areas where the new plaster butts up to another surface. To do this you will need to use a soft, wet half-inch paint brush.

Before you apply any finishing coverings, fill and sand any holes or depressions so that you get a perfect flat finish. X-Tex is great for removing textured coatings, like Artex and Polytex, which were popular a few years ago. It is a safe products as it doesn’t create dust from asbestos which can be harmful. It is made by Eco Solutions using an advanced “science not solvents” approach as it is a water based product. This can be a time-consuming job. Therefore, it’s quite common to just break the board and replace them. It will save time and sometimes it is just the easier option. Replacing plaster is a big undertaking - I've produce a whole course on the topic covering 6 extensive blogs posts. With this in mind, I want to challenge you to think if it's worth it, and whether the benefit outweighs the time, effort & cost. Once you have the plaster on the trowel, spread it evenly on the surface. Do not attempt to smooth it at this stage.Next, cover any and all flooring with plastic dust sheets as again, plaster can soak in and once dry is a nightmare to get out. After the plaster removal, you will encounter the lath, a series of thin wooden slats used to support the plaster. Here’s how to handle this part of the process: Identify the Lath

If you have any cables attached to the skirting board remove the cable clips with a pair of pliers. Grips the nail in the clip and pull; if difficult to remove gently twist and pull. Hold the knife at an angle and apply even pressure as you drag it across the plaster to score it. You’re looking to make a series of vertical and horizontal cuts in the plaster to create a grid pattern. Each square in the grid should be about a foot wide. This size is ideal because it results in chunks of plaster that are easy to manage during removal. Depth of Scoring Pry off the Sections: Insert a pry bar into the cuts you’ve made and carefully pry the sections away from the wall studs. Again, be mindful of what’s behind the wall. We have more information about asbestos, how to recognise it and what to do it you have it in our removing asbestos project. Methods for Removing Artex The clean-up process is an essential step after you’ve finished removing the plaster and lath. Here’s how to proceed:The first thing you need to do, is cut along the top of the board with a Stanley knife. This is done to break the seal with any decorator’s caulk that was used to seal the top edge, between the board and the wall. It will also stop you from ripping any wallpaper on the walls. Wide metal spatula - (for scraping the walls down afterwards, so an old one that you're not too bothered about would be best)
