About this deal

We rolled this programme out within our store and are looking to roll it out to other branches. The Assessor's professional attitude and help has developed staff and the store. We think this is a fantastic opportunity we are going to offer this programme to our staff and the staff feel that the courses have benefited them. We think it is a great opportunity for everyone.” Making sure that your XL Bully is safe and non-reactive in public is crucial and doing this safely will take time, the trainers advise. Trainer Daniella, 26, recommends starting off in “low-distraction areas” like a quiet park, before working your way up to busier environments. It gave me more confidence in what am doing and made me progress in subjects I had a difficult time dealing with. I also learned how to read body language and I learned more about my own company.”

Jo-Rosie also recommends developing a bond with a local trainer you can trust - so you have someone to call just like you would a 999 emergency call. She said: “You must have muzzle training, lead training and measuring the dogs up. A big bit of advice is to have a bond with a local trainer, even if you don’t use them straight away but you have someone you know, trust and can speak to. Daniella Brant, CEO of Champion Dog Training in Essex, said: “People need to ensure their XL Bullies are desensitised in all environments so they are non-reactive and feel comfortable where they are taken and are able to walk past people without having a reaction. That can take a lot of time so a trainer can assess your XL Bully first and slowly decrease distances in different environments, rather than jumping in the deep end. It is great to have the additional support as I feel able to ask my Assessor questions and she helps me.” Even things like the amount of people that have struggled to get muzzles that fit their dog. We’re in a cost of living crisis and people are really struggling with the costs involved with this.” When I left school I didn't want a job in computing as school put me right off it. Now I am happy working with computers. I learned tasks that significantly speeds up the time it takes to do tasks.”We now offer this programme to all our staff as part of their Training and Development. We started off with a few on the programme to see how it went and from there, we currently have 12 people on the programme in our one store doing a variety of courses. This will hopefully help with retention of staff whilst up skilling the workforce and assisting with our staff training and development policy. It has helped our Company to show the staff that we value them an upskill them to Management Level.” Dog trainer Rob Metcalfe, from One to One Training School is receiving frantic calls every day from terrified owners. Given the impact that it’s already having, including the pressure on rescue centres and people facing losing their homes at the end of this year if they keep their dog, we do feel that there is a good grounds for an injunction. The trouble is when you get an aggressive XL Bully, they are very dangerous because they are strong and capable of doing a lot of damage which is why it is massively important to have a balanced dog trainer with good qualifications.” Dog trainer, animal behaviourist and expert witness, Jo-Rosie Haffenden, agreed, adding: “If you have a Bully XL, at the end of the day, you can’t afford for your dog to be doing that [bad] behaviour because you’re going to get in trouble and the thing you won’t find over YouTube or the internet is why they are showing that behaviour. She said the looming prospect of the ban had affected the mental health of owners, and there was a lot of uncertainty about which dogs would be included.

Our trainers are experienced and knowledgeable, working closely with you and your dog to achieve the desired results. We are committed to helping you build a strong and positive relationship that will last a lifetime. I worried about my core skills but my Assessor helped me understand what was being asked and with practicing what I had been taught when I was ready for Assessment I was so happy that I knew what was being asked and felt confident. I would recommend doing this programme.” The Apprenticeship Programmes are a way of “Earning while you are Learning”. The programmes are delivered with a flexible approach and are carried out within the workplace at a time that is convenient to the Employer and the Apprentice. It is a structured format that develops the Apprentice within the workplace which leads to an improvement in skills, attitude, motivation and enthusiasm. The Modern Apprenticeship programmes are made up of a Framework which includes Core Skills and Industry Specific Standards developed and designed by the Sector Skills Councils. The Sector Skills Councils we work with are; People 1st International , Instructus Skills, the IMI etc. We use Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) as our Awarding Body. On Achievement a Framework Certificate is issued by the appropriate Sector Skills Council along with an SQA Certificate for the specific Qualification undertaken and the Level you have achieved which includes any Core Skills required. I'm just so happy to have the opportunity to be able to gain experience have a better understanding and most importantly gain qualifications for the business and myself.” The assessor took the time required to allow my staff member to achieve at their own pace, which resulted in them gaining more confidence, enthusiasm for the job and are now a valued member of staff, I would recommend XL Training to any employer and I now offer the SVQ at interview stage which helps me recruit staff who show a genuine interest on developing their skills. The Training framework was structured and it gave me comfort that we were following industry standards,”

We would like the government to consider licensing, because that is something that’s been presented to them, even through their own commissioned research, and has been ignored,” said Coulthard. “There’s lots of really good models that are successful, where countries have just done away with breed specific legislation because what they found is they just kept banning more dog breeds and it clearly wasn’t working. We are continually graded as a Training Provider who delivers a High Quality of work showing a "High Confidence" rating by the Awarding Body, Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA).

Another possible requirement from the ban may mean that dogs will need to get measured in size. Jo-Rosie advises getting your XL Bully used to this before they need to be measured by a stranger. “I would suggest that the owners do it first and get the dog used to being measured by someone that they know and trust, put your hands all over your dog while you're feeding him and telling him what a good boy he is and get used to the measuring tape all over his body.” 8. Know a local trainer The Programme allowed me to explore my development needs and performance areas, e.g., it pushed me to learn more about commerciality. Thinking about all aspects of not only your own role but the business as well.” She adds: "So perhaps start by having a dog behind a baby gate and that person around for coffee, and let the dog get used to their smell and voice and then maybe they can start throwing food to the dog from a distance. If they are showing soft eyes, ears down and their tail is wagging and look comfortable, it may be worth letting the dog out with that person or take the dog on a walk with them. I got a bit behind and my Assessor helped me with my Time Management issues and showed me how to prioritise.”I was very impressed with the Assessor and how they took time to teach my employee how to do Core Skills Numeracy. Without his support and input and allowing my employee to learn at his own pace he would not have achieved this. This helped my staff to feel more confident and he was very pleased with himself. Great experience all round, very impressed.” It has made me realise just how much work is involved in what we do here and shows me that detail counts. It encouraged me to think about my other team mates more and how to effectively handover, I feel I can lead much better now.”

XL has turned one of our employees around from being somebody who was nearly leaving us because she was bored into somebody who has now taken on more responsibility and is a valued member of staff with promotion on the horizon in a 6 month period.” We’ll begin with environmental training, ensuring your dog is fully socialised to prevent unwanted aggression or shyness in public spaces. Our basic obedience training will see your dog correctly responding to “sit”, “stay”, “down”, recall and food refusal commands, and once mastered they will move onto more specialised training for protection or service. If you’d like to learn more about our Bulldog training, call us directly 24/7 or use our WhatsApp. Any aggression you see, barking, growling or showing their teeth in any situation, before this comes in, now is the time to get that sorted.” Here are their top tips for training an XL Bully... 1. Gently socialise Our next steps are to apply for the injunction to delay the ban and then also apply for the judicial review,” said Sophie Coulthard, 39, an XL bully owner who heads up Don’t Ban Me – Licence Me.

It has made me realise how much work I actually do in store and how my work effect others and customers.”
