About this deal

I managed to get it spot on using some thin bits of cardboard stuffed up between the rotor and pad’s with brake on while i tightened each bolt a little at a time, as on my frame the caliper wanted to pull over to one side as i tightened the bolts. The brakes operate in a closed circuit and therefore do not need to bleed, there are two adjustments, one for cable play and one for oil pressure / pad distance. Hydraulic pistons are actuated by a normal brake cable - so you can keep your existing rim brake shifters. The bike itself has been a revelation and I’ve really gotten into cx, with the odd race and long off road rides, even though I wasn’t too fussed when I bought it and was following Mrs Kilo’s lead into cx. For non-mechanics, you'll be pleased to hear this process is very simple, exactly the same as fitting a set of cable disc brakes.

Well provided you can look past the fact Juin Tech isn't an established brand – at least not in the UK where this review is being written – you should be smiling with these R1 anchors. The package includes a pair of brakes (pads included), 2 flat mount adapters, 2 160 mm discs + screws.I’ve been pondering a set as nothing in budget comes with full hydro brakes, so if these were adequate then at least I could upgrade to R685’s later and transfer the 5800 or whatever onto my road bike and upgrade that to 11s. So saying – I’ll be treating the Tripster over the next few months with an upgrade to shimano full hydraulic / 11 speed, which I’m looking forward to. Give that it is a budget bike it was never going to make sense up dating to full hydros so the alternative seemed to be TRP HY/RD, however people seem to have mixed views on how well these run, so I was never 100% keen on these.

Fitting was easy enough, the instructions such as they are make sense and allowing for fitting a new inner cable it only took about twenty minutes to get them on the bike. Maybe not the best apples-to-apples comparison, but I've found the GT-F to have significantly more power and modulation. Finally got round to fitting my set a week ago, had one ride on them so far and was impressed despite them being brand new and not really bedded in. I can't speak to the SRAM piece of the equation, but I can't imagine it's *that* different from Shimano. Ut enim ad minim veniam, quis nostrud exercitation ullamco laboris nisi ut aliquip ex ea commodo consequat.

They are definately more powerful than the bb5 on my wife’s bike, and feel a bit ‘nicer’ too to someone more used to mtb hydraulics.

My question is, has anyone else experienced running Juin Tech F1 with SRAM 11 speed (RED,FORCE, RIVAL 22). The points do not expire, and can be used to top up your cash payment, or to purchase products outright. I have used the F1's with Sram levers as well, and while also quite good, the GT's are a step up in braking performance.

It's important to use good quality compressionless housing, so that force applied at the lever is transmitted efficiently along the length of the cable to the caliper; I opted for Jagwire's Road Pro brake kit. This allows the rider to use their normal sti/ergo or flat bar levers on a disc brake bike without the expense of upgrading everything to a full hydraulic system. When working well they are ok but they seem to need regular adjustment and loose bite quite regularly.

The F1 is the latest addition to the Juin Tech stable, sold as a set including mounting bolts, adaptors and rotors. Well the brakes didn't immediately feel much more powerful than the cable disc brakes (Hayes CX Expert) fitted previously, but after a week or two of riding the pads had bedded in nicely. That's important as many full hydraulic systems can provide too much stopping power for low rider weights, using larger, more difficult shifters with hydraulic reservoirs. If you're hoping for stopping power that's comparable to the best hydraulic systems then we hate to break it to you, these aren't that. Our Colorado-based team previously found that TRP's similar HY/RD model didn't suffer any noticeable brake fade on long descents of Boulder's Flagstaff mountain, and indications are good that the Juin Tech R1 brakes handle themselves similarly.
