About this deal

But, I guess with last chapter’s revelation that Culver was merely an assistant to Fergal, he wasn’t really an important character either. All around, farmhands dropped their tools, and even the long grass, silvered and heavy with dew, caught the mood and leaned forward.

We are taught to think that the battle lines separate the good from the bad, but the truth, as you are beginning to understand, is less comfortable. Maybe I don’t need to make a note of the old rulers that Aedan listed, but if they do come up again, well, I’ve at least written down their names.

Iver confronts Aedan the next day, but all of Aedan’s friends are there who witnessed Iver’s illegal party, so Iver backs off. Aedan suspects that Clauman stole the large pile of money he had before the wolf chase happened which makes Aedan cry. Renshaw is an activist against sex trafficking and is currently publishing a book about the relationship between two sisters.

Aedan’s tries to be like, but how does that explain you never coming back home that time we moved to Castath and you were gone for days, but Clauman realizes that there are still people around, so he gets all hard again and leaves. And I’ll give Renshaw this – it feels like he’s at least trying to make his description interesting and vivid. I could see my father was scared, but he didn’t want to argue with his brother-in-law, so instead he just laughed – that thin, false kind of laugh. Probably what will happen is that Nessa will get together with Osric – someone who will treat her right – Clauman will come around trying to kidnap her or whatever, and Osric knocks him out. But this way, we get to learn that Aedan wants some poor kid name Emroy to have a “wasp in his rods.

Aedan had become an expert in coaxing and nudging – and perhaps one or two of those nudges might have been misunderstood as shoves, but they had been given with the best intentions.

As much as I like Aedan being wrong in this flashback, I think spec fic is overdue for a subversion of this trope. Aedan is super excited, but Fergal tells him that before he can go to Lekrau to go rescue he has to be able to pass himself off as a local Lekrau. As soon as I spotted the cover for Jonathan Renshaw’s Dawn of Wonder, The Wakening, I knew this was the book to critique. Aedan and his group make such a great war strategy that they have to give a presentation in front of hundreds of people. Kalry talks about hearing this song sometimes that she thinks is the Ancient singing, and it reminds Aedan of that time that he thought he heard the storm say his name.Okay, so old poor couple that Aedan and friends helped out the other chapter ago are Malik’s and Ilona’s grandparents. The most interesting thing that happens in this chapter is when Aedan confronts Peashot with hitting Aedan with his peashooter. So, even though I was under the impression that the marshals were part of a military institution, there’s a ton of boys around Aedan’s age who are just starting to join too. I really thought that was why the unnamed soldiers were there – to give a sense of mortal danger without actually killing anyone important. The speed, the foam, the clutched paper … Anyone he passed by would have instantly read the look on his face: Please, let me not be too late!

And once he gets out his friends don’t even ask him where he’s been or what it was like or anything. That would provoke curiosity with something of substance, allowing Renshaw to embellish that without making it feel hokey. It does seem to be some kind of beast that Prince and other dude don’t want the people to know about. The falling boy actually ran out of breath before he hit the icy river, allowing a theatrical pause before the sharp smack of belly and limbs. Neither work makes any effort to generate sympathy or build an emotional bond with the main character.
