This novel does its job best focusing on the ground forces of space marines fighting treachery, and that’s what a lot of us are showing up for.

On my first pass, I found it to be an exhilarating thrill ride from start to finish, on my second while I thought it was great it also felt like it was missing something. Horus and Abaddon take a decent step away from cackling villains like they were in “False Gods,” but the political intrigue of Horus is gone. Gathering the only two remaining terran brothers Artuas knew, Khol and Abbas, the trio bluffed thier way onto a mechanicum service frieghter to work their way towards the outer vessels of the fleet. Tarvitz then arrives and warns them of their imminent betrayal, tasking Lucius with transmitting a warning to the Sons of Horus and Death Guard while he goes to warn the World Eaters.I wouldn't recommend for those who hadn't already read the first two; it's definitely not standalone.

Once again though, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing as the action is great and well deserved considering where we are in the story.A clear plot with stakes both personal (for those about to be bombed) and wider (the bombing is kicking off a galaxy wide revolt). After being granted clemency, Artuas and his brothers would soon find the chance for revenge along side the warriors of the VIIth legion.
