About this deal

Most of all, I hope people will understand that we’re not an issue, an ideology or a fad; we’re just ordinary people who’d really appreciate decent healthcare and snacks. I don’t think she gives herself enough credit for all she’s actually had to go through though and I cried at the treatment she had to go through to prove at times she is in-fact a women and to be able to access services in the NHS and life. Touching on topics from coming out to trans parenthood, fashion disasters and pop culture icons, Carrie’s memoir is both frank and funny. You can push a culture war, ban books and try to bring back Section 28, but that knowledge and understanding and empathy is out there now. Yes, there were tears of anger at the transphobia Carrie and others have had to and continue to face and tears of frustration and disbelief at the sheer lack of humanity within our NHS when it comes to trans healthcare and access to services but…there was also joy; so much joy.

I was lucky enough to get my copy and have it signed by Carrie herself at its launch last month and have been really excited to read it since. Carrie Kills A Man* is about growing up in a world that doesn't want you, and about how it feels to throw a hand grenade into a perfect life.Carrie explores growing up trans and coming out later in life, showing the real impact of anti-trans rhetoric, both historic and current.

You’ve written a number of books before in differing forms – how did you find writing your own story? Angry at the treatment of the trans community in society (JEEZO WHY DO PEOPLE THINK IT’S OK TO HURL ABUSE AT SOMEONE WALKING DOWN THE STREET!

Once you have identified which file is best for your use, you will need to manually upload the relevant file to your device. Clearly this was not an easy life choice for Carrie to make and to my surprise, fear is a big part of her life, something I hadn't really thought about before.

Alongside Carrie's personal story, the book also intertwines some social commentary on transgender rights and history, the realities of being transgender, and the struggle that denying oneself authenticity can bring. Because if you do, then the Carries of the future, their families and their friends will understand that being trans offers possibility and pleasure, not pain or punishment. It’s about growing up weird, escaping into pop music and trying to hold things together until you can’t hold them any longer – and what happens when you have to hurl a hand grenade into the middle of an apparently perfect life. Crying tears of joy kind of funny but also ridiculously relatable tales of everyday mishaps kind of funny. You will need to download your purchased ebook in the zipped folder to a desktop computer and extract the ebooks.Another recommendation from a Book Club friend, this time for non-fiction (also realising January is becoming a month of pink covers). Carrie's stories about her early fashion mishaps had me roaring with laughter - 'bondage potato' literally had me weeping, and chuckling hours later. I really hope readers see themselves reflected a little bit, whether that’s in the funnier stuff – I think we sometimes need outsiders’ eyes to remind us of just how weird and funny a lot of the things we take for granted are – or in the bigger picture: you don’t need to be trans to wonder what it’d be like if you decided to reboot your whole life and take a different path.
